The LEGO Group has officially unveiled the LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set, a stunning tribute to the Dutch master’s iconic painting. Created in collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, this new 2,615-piece set transforms Van Gogh’s beloved work into a detailed 3D brick rendition.
The set offers fans the opportunity to immerse themselves in Van Gogh’s artistry while exploring the story behind his famous Sunflowers painting from 1889. Designed with precision, the LEGO version highlights the artist’s distinctive use of light and shade, along with the three radiant shades of yellow that dominate the original piece. The model includes all 16 sunflowers depicted in the painting, featuring adjustable petals, a removable frame, a tile bearing Van Gogh’s signature, and a hanger element for easy display.
Building the LEGO Art Sunflowers is a creative process akin to painting on a blank canvas. Layers of bricks are added step by step, bringing the artwork to life in vibrant colour. To enrich the experience, LEGO has teamed up with the Van Gogh Museum to produce a podcast that delves into the creation of the set. Available from 1st March on LEGO.com, YouTube, and Spotify, the podcast features Senior Curator Nienke Bakker and LEGO Designer Stijn Oom discussing the collaboration and exploring Van Gogh’s legacy as the painter of sunflowers.
“Working on one of the world’s most famous paintings can be quite daunting, but recreating Sunflowers has been a dream come true. We collaborated closely with the Van Gogh Museum and its experts, delving into the details to meticulously craft a 3D version of the original artwork. One of the most challenging yet crucial aspects was translating the impasto effect into LEGO bricks while preserving the painting’s asymmetrical yet balanced composition. We are incredibly proud of the result and hope our fans enjoy building it as much as we enjoyed bringing Van Gogh’s masterpiece to life.”
Stijn Oom, the LEGO designer behind the set, shared his thoughts on the project
Rob Groot, Managing Director of the Van Gogh Museum, expressed his excitement about the collaboration: “It was wonderful to see how the LEGO Group and the experts of our museum have worked together with such attention to detail and appreciation for the original artwork. We hope this LEGO set will inspire and engage new audiences with the art and life story of Vincent van Gogh.”
To celebrate the set’s release on 1st March, LEGO has created two life-sized brick replicas of the painting, which will be displayed permanently at the LEGO Store in Amsterdam and the Van Gogh Museum. LEGO fans in Amsterdam and Marseille will also have the chance to meet the set’s designer, Stijn Oom, and get their sets signed at special events on 1st and 2nd March, respectively.
Additional activities are planned throughout 2025 as part of the collaboration with the Van Gogh Museum. From June to August, a large brick-built LEGO installation will be exhibited at the museum, before moving to LEGO House in Billund and LEGO World in Utrecht. To make the experience accessible to a global audience, a virtual curated tour will also be available, allowing LEGO and art enthusiasts worldwide to explore the installation from the comfort of their homes.
The Van Gogh Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Van Gogh’s works, proudly includes the 1889 Sunflowers painting as one of its treasures. Painted during Van Gogh’s time in Arles, France, the masterpiece captures the vibrant beauty and intricate detail of the sunflowers that have become synonymous with his name.
The LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is now available for pre-order from 28th January 2025 via LEGO.com/Sunflowers, the Van Gogh Museum webshop, and LEGO Stores. It will officially launch on 1st March 2025, priced at €199.99 / £169.99 / $199.99.
