THE BRIDE! | MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL’S RADICAL FRANKENSTEIN REIMAGINING ARRIVES 6 MARCH 2026!

Maggie Gyllenhaal is set to return with one of the most ambitious films of her career. The Bride!, her latest feature as writer and director, offers a bold, genre-defying reimagining of the Frankenstein myth, transporting the classic story into the cultural chaos of 1930s Chicago. The film will be released in the UK and Ireland on 6 March 2026 by Warner Bros. Pictures.

From the Academy Award-nominated filmmaker behind The Lost Daughter, The Bride! blends gothic horror, noir romance and social rebellion into a strikingly modern vision of one of literature’s most enduring stories.

A Radical Take on a Classic Monster Story

At the centre of The Bride! is a lonely and disillusioned Frankenstein, played by Christian Bale, who journeys to Chicago in search of companionship. He turns to Dr. Euphronious, a groundbreaking scientist portrayed by five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening, to help him create a partner.

Their experiment resurrects a murdered young woman, and The Bride, played by Jessie Buckley, is born. What follows quickly spirals beyond scientific ambition into chaos: murder, possession, and the rise of a dangerous cultural movement, culminating in a volatile romance between two outlaw lovers.

Rather than retelling the familiar Frankenstein narrative, Gyllenhaal reframes it as a story about identity, autonomy and rebellion, with The Bride emerging as a force far more unpredictable than her creators ever intended.

Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale Lead a Prestigious Cast

The film boasts an acclaimed ensemble cast. Jessie Buckley, fresh off a run of fearless performances in independent and awards cinema, takes on the titular role, while Christian Bale brings his trademark intensity to Frankenstein himself.

They are joined by Peter Sarsgaard, alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in an Academy Award-nominated role, and Oscar winner Penélope Cruz, rounding out one of the most high-profile casts attached to a gothic drama in recent years.

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Vision Behind the Camera

Gyllenhaal directs from her own original screenplay, producing alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman Keren. Executive producers include Carla Raij, David Webb and Courtney Kivowitz.

Behind the scenes, The Bride! is supported by an elite creative team. Cinematography is handled by Lawrence Sher, with production design by Karen Murphy and editing by Dylan Tichenor. The film’s haunting score comes from Hildur Guðnadóttir, whose work has reshaped modern film music, while Sandy Powell brings her Oscar-winning expertise to costume design. Music supervision is led by Randall Poster.

This collaboration signals a visually rich, sonically daring film that leans heavily into atmosphere and character rather than traditional horror tropes.

A Warner Bros. Release to Watch in 2026

Presented by Warner Bros. Pictures, The Bride! is produced by First Love Films and In The Current Company, marking another major studio-backed project that still retains a fiercely auteur-driven edge.

With its blend of gothic horror, radical romance and cultural commentary, The Bride! is already shaping up to be one of 2026’s most talked-about releases.
