The Natural History Museum has announced that its hit immersive experience, Our Story with David Attenborough, will officially extend its run until 30 August 2026 due to overwhelming demand. Originally scheduled to end in January, the extension ensures thousands more visitors can experience one of the Museum’s most acclaimed productions.
The announcement marks another milestone for the Museum’s expanding programme of innovative storytelling.
A Record-Breaking Immersive Experience
Developed with Sir David Attenborough and the award-winning team at Open Planet Studios, the Museum’s first fully immersive show has already welcomed more than 80,000 visitors since launching in June.
Adam Farrar, Director of Commercial and Visitor Experience at the Natural History Museum, praised the experience’s impact:
“Combining Sir David’s masterful storytelling and the beautiful cinematic production by Open Planet Studios, Our Story with David Attenborough has been one of our best performing experiences this year.”
Set within the Museum’s atmospheric Jerwood Gallery, the 50-minute show features large-scale projections, scientifically accurate animation, and vivid real-world footage that transform the space into a living, breathing narrative. Attenborough guides audiences through the intricate relationship between humans and the Earth — a central theme that resonates strongly in a world facing unprecedented environmental challenges.
Jonnie Hughes, Co-Founder and Director of Open Planet Studios, added:
“The incredible response… highlights the power of immersive storytelling in connecting audiences with the most pressing issues of our time.”
Sir David Attenborough on the Story We’re Writing
Sir David himself describes the experience as a dual narrative: the 4-billion-year history of the Earth and the brief but impactful chapter of humankind.
“These two stories are not, at this moment, aligned – but they could be.”
His hope, he says, is that visitors leave with a deeper understanding of humanity’s responsibility in shaping the planet’s future.
Original Soundtrack Now Available
To coincide with the extension, the Museum has released Our Story: The Original Soundtrack on all major streaming platforms. Composed by Tony Award and Olivier Award–nominated Nick Powell, the score blends orchestral soundscapes with electronic elements and human vocals to mirror the emotional sweep of the film.
Powell describes the score as an attempt to hold onto both “Earth’s majesty and its fragility,” particularly inspired by the iconic Earthrise image captured during the Apollo missions.
New Companion Book: Our Story – The Remarkable Story of an Extraordinary Species
Fans looking to deepen their experience can also explore the newly announced companion book by Colin Butfield and Jonnie Hughes.
The book — rich with imagery and poetic storytelling — will be available exclusively through the Museum’s online shop from 20 November 2025 via: https://www.nhmshop.co.uk/our-story
It will then roll out to wider retailers from early December.
Nick Davies, Managing Director of John Murray Group, likens it to celebrated works such as The Lost Words, calling it “a beautiful, inspirational… history of the world around us.”
