England’s Lionesses aren’t just changing the game on the pitch – they’re transforming football fandom off it. As Sarina Wiegman’s squad prepares to head to Switzerland for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, a new survey of 2,000 UK football fans from the essential matchday app FotMob, reveals just how dramatically the women’s game has grown since that iconic Wembley final in 2022.
According to the data, almost one-third of fans (32.2%) began following women’s football within the past five years, with over 30% (31.7%) citing Euro 2022 or the last World Cup as their entry point. That historic victory – watched by a global audience of 365 million – has paved the way for unprecedented momentum across the domestic and international game.
FotMob now hosts over 160,000 Lionesses followers, making England’s women the fifth most-followed team on the platform in the UK – ahead of several top Premier League clubs.
That fandom is only expected to grow this summer, as nearly half of respondents (49.8%) say they’ll tune into Euro 2025 to support their national team – and a remarkable 87% are backing the Lionesses to be crowned winners once more.
The rising interest is reflected across the sport. Since July 2022:
-
The number of women and girls playing football in the UK has increased by 56%, as per findings from The FA1
-
Deloitte reports matchday income in the WSL has jumped 73%, from £7m to £12m year-on-year, noting the 2023/24 WSL season became the first where all 12 clubs generated over £1m in revenue2
FotMob’s Head of Global Partnerships, Mike Backler, said,
“The Lionesses didn’t just win a trophy in 2022 – they changed the face of football. We’ve seen first-hand the incredible growth in women’s football fandom, and it’s clear that this summer’s Euros could be another landmark moment.
