A new year often sparks a shift in food habits, with Brits eagerly embracing the latest flavour trends — from sweet-meets-savoury combinations to bold, umami-packed blends. But while tastebuds may be evolving, one thing remains crystal clear: the UK is still a nation utterly obsessed with dips.
New research from Papa Johns reveals that when it comes to sauces and condiments, Brits aren’t letting go of their dipping rituals anytime soon. In fact, three quarters of the nation admit to regularly dipping their pizza slices, while a bold two in five (40%) confess they see food merely as a vehicle for dips.
As trending flavours continue to influence the nation’s palate, Brits are increasingly opting for combinations like hot honey, blue cheese and honey & mustard (20%), alongside other sweet and savoury mash-ups (13%) to level up their pizza nights.
Double-Dipping Drama and Condiment Crimes
While Britain’s love of dips is undeniable, how we dip is proving far more divisive. Over a quarter (27%) admit to double-dipping as standard practice, with a daring 15% even quadruple-dipping. In social settings, three in five (59%) say sharing dips with friends is totally normal — and 7% would even share with a stranger.
However, not everyone is so relaxed. Nearly a third (28%) insist dips should be strictly personal and never shared. According to respondents, the biggest condiment etiquette crimes include mixing flavours (26%) and taking more than your fair share of sauce (16%). Consider yourselves warned.
It’s Not Just Pizza — Fried Chicken Reigns Supreme
Pizza may be the gateway dipper, but fried chicken is quickly becoming the nation’s ultimate dipping companion. Nearly two-thirds (65%) say it’s the perfect food for dipping, with over half (55%) claiming they always dunk their fried chicken into sauce.
