Are Kitchen Skills Baked into Your DNA? Warburtons Marks 150 Years by Putting It to the Test

Warburtons is marking its 150th year with a campaign that pushes the focus away from its legacy and much-loved recipes to something far more forensic, asking whether baking talent might actually sit within your DNA. In partnership with Living DNA, and the help of celebrity Matt Baker, the brand has launched a limited-edition test designed to uncover whether some of us are naturally wired for the kitchen – or destined to peak at store-bought sponge.

Early analysis suggest Brits may have a natural edge. Based on analysis of 10,000 people, the average baking score lands at 58%, nudging just above the level that suggests a native aptitude. Regional pride comes into play too, with the South East leading the pack, while the Midlands sits at the other end of the table. Among those scoring above average, 59% already back their abilities, 41% can bake without relying on a recipe, and more than a quarter are baking at least once a week. More tellingly, 9% of those with strong genetic markers have never baked at all, suggesting there’s untapped talent simply sitting on the sidelines.

The test itself breaks baking down into four core traits: taste sensitivity, smell sensitivity, metabolism, and manual handling, which focuses on coordination and control when it comes to kneading dough or working pastry. Combined, these markers generate a score out of 100, offering an indication of the baking expertise of the test taker.

To bring the idea to life, Matt Baker stepped up to the challenge, going head-to-head with a professional Warburtons baker to see if his surname is more than a coincidence. The series of baking challenges stress-tested instinct, technique, and composure in the kitchen. Watch how it all played out here.

For anyone tempted to test their own credentials, the “Born to Bake?” kits are now available via Living DNA. The first 100 can be claimed free of charge using the code BORNTOBAKE, with additional kits available to order online. Each one delivers a personalised score, offering a clear view of how you stack up against the national average.

The campaign celebrates 150 years since Warburtons’ beginnings in Bolton, where it started life as a small family grocery shop. Still run by the fifth generation, the business has grown into the UK’s leading bakery brand, supplying thousands of retailers across the country each day. Its reach now spans 11 bakeries, 16 depots, and a fleet that keeps shelves stocked nationwide.
