Teams that have won most penalties:
Although the World Cup has been around for almost 100 years, it was not until 1978 that the penalty shootout was introduced as a tie-breaker, and it was only used for the first time in the following edition in 1982. Since then, every edition has had at least one match decided by a penalty shootout.
To date, Argentina has been the team that has participated most in penalty shoot-outs in the World Cup, with 5 matches decided this way – of those, the team has won 4 times. Although six nations (Germany, Brazil, France, Spain, Italy and England) have 4 matches ended in penalty kicks, Germany is the most prominent, having won all of them. Brazil is in third place, winning 3 out of 4 matches.
