What to Eat Now: Mama Li in Canary Wharf

If you’re searching for your next go-to comfort spot in London, Mama Li’s newest opening in Wood Wharf deserves a spot at the top of your list. Officially opening its third location in Canary Wharf, this growing London favorite is bringing authentic Hong Kong–style siu mei to one of the city’s busiest districts. The space is inspired by traditional Hong Kong cha chaan tengs, blending nostalgic café culture with modern design to create an atmosphere that feels both comforting and well-suited for everything from quick lunches to relaxed evening meals.

Founded by Catherine Hua and her mother, Mama Li uses authentic Cantonese traditions and recreate dishes they grew up eating. The menu centers around siu mei, or Cantonese roasted meats. Options include crispy pork, BBQ pork, soy chicken, and roasted duck. The meats are prepared using traditional techniques. A charcoal-fired oven gives the duck a deep, rich flavor.

We tried several dishes during the visit, but the roast duck stood out immediately. The skin was crisp, the meat was tender, and it was paired with plum sauce making it the best dish on the table. The duck spring rolls were also a highlight, they had the same rich flavor, and were combined with a chili sauce which added just the right amount of heat.

The BBQ roast with the jasmine rice was flavorful and well-balanced, while the siumai with chili oil brought a savory kick. The steamed custard bun added a soft, sweet finish to the meal, rounding out a menu that felt both comforting and cohesive.

The homemade lemon iced tea was another standout. It was refreshing without being too sweet, made using tea leaves imported from Hong Kong. The bolo bao was also a highlight, the bun was soft with a slightly sweet top, and the butter melted into the center, making it the perfect sweet treat at the end of the meal.

The atmosphere ties everything together. The space feels warm and welcoming. The staff are friendly and attentive creating a nice dining experience. Mama Li’s Canary Wharf location expands on its earlier, more casual spots. There is still a grab-and-go option, but now, there is more room to sit and enjoy the food.

If you’re looking for a spot that delivers authentic Hong Kong flavors in a welcoming setting, Mama Li in Canary Wharf is well worth a visit.
