VODAFONE LAUNCHES ‘CHECK-IN & CHIPS’ AT READING FESTIVAL, GIVING YOUNG FESTIVALGOERS FREE CHIPS FOR MESSAGING HOME

Young festivalgoers can grab a free portion of chips at Reading Festival this weekend by sending a quick video message home, as Vodafone launches its new ‘Check-in & Chips’ experience.

Festival season is often about freedom, friendship and staying out until the final headline act, but for parents, sending a child off to their first festival can come with a fair amount of nerves.

Now, Vodafone is putting a tasty spin on the traditional “I’m safe” text, launching its first-ever ‘Check-in & Chips’ experience at Pepsi MAX presents Reading Festival from Thursday 27 August.

The activation will give festivalgoers a free portion of chips in exchange for recording a short video message to send home, helping young people stay connected with their families while rewarding them with some festival food.

Why Are Parents Nervous About Festival Season?

New research commissioned by Vodafone has highlighted the changing relationship between young people and their families as festivalgoers head off for weekends of independence.

According to the research, 57% of young people surveyed are heading to a festival this summer, with many using the experience to celebrate major milestones including finishing exams, preparing to start university or securing their first job.

For 29% of 16–18-year-olds, 2026 is also the first year they have attended a festival without their family.

While 92% of parents and guardians surveyed said they trust their children to make good decisions at festivals, 65% admitted to feeling nervous about them attending.

Meanwhile, almost three quarters (74%) said they spend the festival weekend waiting for updates from their children.

That is where Vodafone’s new experience comes in.

What Is Vodafone’s ‘Check-in & Chips’ Experience?

Located outside White Camping at Reading Festival, the Check-in & Chips activation combines technology, food and a little bit of parental reassurance.

Festivalgoers can head to the experience, write a message home while a camera records them, and create a short video message to send to their family.

Once they’ve checked in, they can pick up a complimentary portion of chips, subject to availability.

The experience will run from 11am to 3pm from Thursday 27 August until Sunday 30 August 2026, giving festivalgoers plenty of opportunities to stop by between sets.

Vodafone says the experience is powered by 5G+, its next-generation 5G Standalone (5G SA) technology.

Zoe Ball Helps Launch the Festival Check-In

Broadcaster Zoe Ball has joined Vodafone to launch the experience, drawing on her own experience of attending festivals and now watching her daughter attend Reading Festival for the first time.

Speaking about the activation, Ball said that while festivals are an important opportunity for young people to enjoy their independence, parents still want to know that everything is going well.

The presenter joked that getting teenagers to actually check in can be challenging — but adding free chips could make the process considerably easier.

“They get fed, we get our update. Perfect!”

Vodafone 5G+ Comes to Reading Festival

Connectivity has become an increasingly important part of the modern festival experience, from sharing videos and photos to finding friends in huge crowds and keeping in touch with family.

Vodafone says it has enhanced its 5G network across the Reading and Leeds Festival sites, with increased capacity and faster speeds designed to improve connectivity when thousands of people are using their phones simultaneously.

The Check-in & Chips experience will also allow visitors to experience Vodafone’s 5G+ network slicing technology.

Vodafone describes 5G+ as its next-generation 5G Standalone technology, designed to provide faster speeds, greater capacity and more reliable connectivity in busy locations such as stadiums and festivals.

Free Charging, Ice Cream and Wi-Fi at Reading & Leeds

The Check-in & Chips activation isn’t the only way Vodafone is getting involved at Reading and Leeds.

At Reading Festival, Vodafone and Three customers can visit the Vodafone Viewing Platform, which will offer free ice cream, complimentary phone charging and views of The Grid, available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Over at Leeds Festival, festivalgoers can visit Vodafone’s Connect & Charge area to recharge their phones and access free Wi-Fi.

There will also be Vodafone Power Banks available for festivalgoers who need an extra boost to keep their phones alive throughout the weekend.

Festivalgoers Can Also Try Vodafone’s Network for Free

Non-Vodafone customers heading to Reading or Leeds can also trial Vodafone’s network through a free seven-day eSIM trial.

Festivalgoers with a compatible smartphone can scan the relevant QR code at the festival and activate the trial through the My Vodafone app.

The offer includes:

  • 50GB of data
  • 500 minutes
  • 500 texts
  • Seven days of connectivity

Vodafone’s Festival Connectivity Push

The campaign arrives as mobile connectivity becomes increasingly central to the festival experience.

From sharing a video of your favourite performance to checking where your friends are, accessing festival information or simply sending a message home, having a reliable connection can make a major difference during a busy festival weekend.

Vodafone says its wider Nation’s Network is backed by an £11 billion investment from VodafoneThree, with a target of reaching 99% 5G Standalone population coverage by 2030.

The company also launched commercial 5G+ Local Slicing earlier this year, describing it as a dedicated high-performance network lane that can provide guaranteed performance across a defined location.

For festivalgoers, however, the most immediate benefit could be considerably simpler: being able to send that all-important “I’m having a great time” message home — and getting a portion of chips for doing it.
