Soho’s dining scene just got a fiery new addition. Executive Chef Nikesh Sawant and his talented team have launched TANGRA — a vibrant day-to-late-night Indo-Chinese restaurant inspired by the historic Tangra neighbourhood of Kolkata, India.
A Tribute to the Heart of Indo-Chinese Cuisine
Named after the birthplace of Indo-Chinese cooking, TANGRA celebrates the fusion of Hakka Chinese traditions and Indian spices that originated in Kolkata’s Chinese community. This unique culinary hybrid has since evolved across India, from Mumbai’s bustling food stalls to Nepal’s momo carts — and now, to the heart of Soho, London.
A Menu That Marries Nostalgia with Innovation
TANGRA’s menu is an explosion of flavour and creativity. Signature dishes like Himawan Sadeko Chick’n, TANGRA Special Combination Rice, and Manchurian Kofta deliver spice, attitude, and nostalgia in every bite. Diners can also enjoy Indo-Chinese comfort favourites such as Hakka noodles, Gobi 65, Chinese Bhel, and Schezwan Rice.
For something truly inventive, try the restaurant’s signature “Hakko” — a Hakka-inspired taco made with paratha, perfectly blending cultures and textures in one bite.
Chef Sawant explains,
“For me, Indo-Chinese food is pure nostalgia. It’s the taste of Bombay nights after school or post-shift at midnight — plates of Manchurian and noodles shared with friends until sunrise. TANGRA captures that same spirit: fiery, joyful, and unapologetic.”
Handcrafted Flavours and Scratch-Made Sauces
Every sauce at TANGRA is made from scratch using spices sourced directly from India — from smoky Schezwan chutneys to Bombay Szechuan sauces layered with garlic, chillies, and depth of flavour.
Cocktails with Character
The drinks menu is just as dynamic. Highlights include the Lychee Baijiu Sling (Baijiu, lychee, pandan, and grapefruit sherbet), Rasgulla Espresso Martini, and the tropical Piña Kolkata. For those seeking mindful alternatives, the No & Lo menu features refreshing mocktails like jal jeera, No’Rita 0%, and kala khatta fusions — a nod to India’s beloved street flavours.
Soho Spirit, Mumbai Soul
Located just steps from Ronnie Scott’s and Bar Italia, TANGRA channels the buzzing energy of Soho with the soul of Mumbai. The interior design blends Indian mythology and retrofuturist pop culture — complete with patterned floors, brass accents, glowing signage, and rich textures that balance nostalgia and modern flair.
