NIKE LAUNCHES MIND 001 AND MIND 002: INSIDE THE BRAND’S FIRST NEUROSCIENCE-BASED FOOTWEAR

Nike is stepping into an entirely new frontier of performance innovation with the launch of Nike Mind 001 and Nike Mind 002, the brand’s first-ever neuroscience-based footwear silhouettes. Designed to help athletes lock into the right mindset before and after competition, the shoes represent a major shift in how sportswear can influence focus, awareness and recovery — not just physical output.

Set to release in January 2026, the Mind 001 and Mind 002 mark the debut of the Nike Mind platform, a scientific and technological breakthrough more than a decade in the making.

Nike Mind: Footwear Designed for the Brain, Not Just the Body

Unlike traditional performance shoes that prioritise speed, cushioning or stability, Nike Mind footwear is built around the mind-body connection. Both the Mind 001 mule and the Mind 002 sneaker are scientifically shown to activate key sensory areas of the brain through underfoot stimulation, helping athletes feel more grounded, present and focused.

At the core of each shoe are 22 independent foam nodes per foot, bonded to a flexible, water-resistant base. These nodes act like miniature pistons and gimbals as the wearer moves, transmitting subtle sensations and textures from the ground directly into the foot. The result is heightened sensory awareness — a mechanism Nike believes can help clear mental distractions and sharpen concentration.

According to Eric Avar, Nike’s VP and Creative Director of Innovation, the concept represents a fundamental rethink of performance footwear:

“Nike Mind is a new sensory-footwear concept that helps reawaken the foot, the body and the mind. It represents a new paradigm of performance and how we can potentially make athletes better in the future.”

Inside Nike’s Mind Science Department

The Mind 001 and Mind 002 are the first products developed by Nike’s Mind Science Department, a specialised group within the Nike Sport Research Lab (NSRL). Using one of the world’s only mobile brain-and-body imaging labs, Nike’s neuroscientists study athletes in motion — analysing nervous system responses, brain activity and cognition in real time.

This research has allowed Nike to explore how perception, attention and sensory feedback influence performance, recovery and mental resilience. The insights are shaping what the brand describes as a completely new category of products and services designed to help athletes better prepare, train, compete and recover.

Dr. Matthew Nurse, VP and Chief Science Officer at NIKE, Inc., explains the shift:

“For 45 years, Nike has studied the body in motion. Now, we’re expanding into the mind. It’s not just about running faster — it’s about feeling more present, focused and resilient. That’s the next frontier of performance.”

Athlete-Tested, Competition-Proven

Nike says hundreds of athletes have tested Nike Mind footwear over the past five years, including football superstar Erling Haaland. For Haaland, focus is everything — and the constant sensory feedback from the shoes plays a role in his mental preparation.

“Every step I take, I think of the shoe and what I feel in my feet. It helps me bring balance to my game,” Haaland says.

The emphasis on awareness rather than raw performance metrics reflects a growing trend across elite sport, where mental clarity and recovery are increasingly seen as competitive advantages.

Mind 001 vs Mind 002: What’s the Difference?

While both models use the same neuroscience-driven technology, each silhouette serves a slightly different purpose:

  • Nike Mind 001 Mule – Designed for easy on-and-off wear, ideal for pre-competition focus and post-game recovery.

  • Nike Mind 002 Sneaker – Anchors the foot more securely to the footbed, offering increased support and sensation for a deeper sensory experience.

Every element of both designs — from materials to construction — has been refined to deliver a premium, tactile experience, ensuring the technology isn’t just worn, but felt.
