NEARLY HALF OF GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN INSPIRED TO TRY A NEW SPORT AHEAD OF WOMEN’S RUGBY WORLD CUP 2025 FINAL

As the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 Final approaches this weekend, new research from Mastercard reveals the lasting impact of this summer of women’s sport, with nearly half of girls and young women aged 8–25 (43%) saying it has inspired them to try a new sport.

Over a third (37%) of those surveyed would consider giving rugby a try, citing increased visibility, role models and opportunities at school as key motivators.

Recognising the opportunity to drive this change, Mastercard launched Give Rugby a Try, a campaign aimed at getting more girls into rugby.

Hosted at Style of our Own on Regent Street, the home of women’s sport powered by Mastercard, the initiative featured rugby legends, including Maggie Alphonsi and Shaunagh Brown, delivering beginner-friendly sessions for children.

Portia Woodman-Wickliffe, New Zealand player and Global Mastercard Rugby Ambassador, and Dan Carter, former New Zealand player and Global Mastercard Rugby Ambassador, who visited the campaign hub at Style of Our Own this week, said:

“This Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 has shown how far our game has evolved and the potential ahead. Each time we stepped onto the field, we weren’t just playing for ourselves and our countries, we were playing for the young girls watching, showing them that rugby is a place where they can belong and shine. The impact of the tournament, along with initiatives like Mastercard’s Give Rugby a Try, will be felt long after the final whistle, inspiring future generations to dream bigger, and work harder.”

“Rugby has the power to bring people together and build confidence, especially among young players discovering the game for the first time. It’s exciting to see this momentum grow and to be part of efforts to open doors and create opportunities, inspiring future players to pick up the ball and get involved.” – Dan Carter, former New Zealand Player and Global Mastercard Rugby Ambassador.
