A major new workplace health initiative has launched in the UK today, aiming to screen up to 100,000 employees for early risk indicators of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The programme is being delivered by online pharmacy Pharmacy2U in partnership with diagnostic technology provider PocDoc, with follow-up support, guidance and pharmacist consultations included.
Designed to bring preventative healthcare directly into the workplace, the “Healthy Heart Programme” aims to improve early detection of heart-related conditions and reach the 62% of English adults who missed out on an NHS Health Check last year.
Workplace Heart Health Checks Rolled Out Nationwide
The initiative is the first large-scale workplace heart health programme launched by an online pharmacy in the UK. It will offer employees a free at-home or on-the-go cholesterol self-test kit, which takes around 10 minutes to complete using a smartphone-based analysis tool.
Participants will receive a “Healthy Heart Check”, which measures cholesterol levels and provides an estimated heart age, alongside personalised follow-up information and lifestyle support over an 8–10 week period.
The programme is part of a growing shift towards digital-first preventative healthcare aligned with NHS long-term priorities on early intervention and community-based care.
More information on the initiative is available via Pharmacy2U Healthy Heart Workplace Programme.
Royal Mail Among First Major Employers to Join
One of the first organisations to adopt the programme is national delivery service Royal Mail, which is offering the heart health checks to employees across the UK.
The rollout is part of a wider commitment to workplace wellbeing and preventative health, ensuring staff have easier access to essential screenings without needing time off work.
Royal Mail’s participation highlights how large UK employers are increasingly investing in employee health initiatives that go beyond traditional occupational support.
A Postman’s Story: Surviving Cardiac Arrest
The urgency of early detection is underscored by the experience of Leeds-based postman Carl Lockwood, a Royal Mail employee who survived a life-threatening cardiac arrest.
His heart stopped three times and he required CPR from a colleague before paramedics arrived. He now lives with atrial fibrillation and manages his condition through medication and a cardiac stent.
Despite adapting his role from walking routes to driving deliveries, Carl has returned to work and continues to champion heart health awareness.
Speaking about the new programme, he said:
“What Pharmacy2U is doing is brilliant. It’s so important that people get the chance to check in on their heart health, as it really can happen to anyone.”
He added that the experience has reshaped his outlook on life and hopes the initiative will help colleagues identify risks earlier.
How the Healthy Heart Programme Works
The workplace screening programme uses a microfluidic blood test combined with smartphone technology to measure cholesterol levels quickly and accurately.
After completing the test, participants receive:
- A personalised heart health assessment
- Estimated “heart age”
- Follow-up pharmacist consultation
- Educational content and lifestyle guidance delivered over 8–10 weeks
- Optional second testing where appropriate
The programme is designed to support early detection of cardiovascular disease, which remains one of the UK’s leading causes of death.
Why Early Heart Health Screening Matters
Cardiovascular disease is responsible for around a quarter of all deaths in the UK, equating to approximately 170,000 deaths annually. Despite this, many people remain unaware of their risk.
A 2025 Pharmacy2U study found that one in four people aged 40–74 have never had their cholesterol checked, highlighting a significant gap in preventative screening.
The programme also aims to address workforce health challenges, with UK employees now taking an average of 9.5 sick days per year due to illness and long-term conditions.
Expert Insight from Pharmacy2U
Kevin Heath, CEO of Pharmacy2U, said workplace healthcare is key to improving early diagnosis rates:
“When life gets busy, health checks are often the first thing to fall to the bottom of the to-do list. Bringing cardiovascular testing into the workplace makes it easier for people to access checks without taking extra time out of their day.”
He added that the partnership with Royal Mail reflects a long-standing relationship focused on supporting employee wellbeing and improving national heart health outcomes.
Royal Mail on Workplace Wellbeing
Fiona McAslan, Head of Wellbeing at Royal Mail, said:
“Our people are the heart of our business, and we’re grateful for the opportunity to remove barriers that might be stopping people from prioritising their health.”
She emphasised that workplace wellbeing programmes are becoming increasingly important as employers look to support staff health proactively.
A Shift Towards Digital-First Preventative Healthcare
The initiative reflects a broader NHS-aligned strategy focused on prevention, digital access, and reducing pressure on frontline services.
Pharmacy2U’s model includes pharmacist-led follow-up consultations and ongoing digital support, designed to help individuals understand and act on their results over time.
The organisation has stated its ambition to work with the NHS to integrate digital-first cholesterol testing into standard preventative care pathways.
