Manchester City has unveiled The Stadium Speaks — a moving short film featuring award-winning writer and broadcaster Lemn Sissay OBE. The film showcases a heartfelt poem honouring the Black players, fans, and trailblazers who have shaped the club’s proud history.
Commissioned as part of the Club’s Black History Month celebrations, The Stadium Speaks traces Manchester City’s evolution from Maine Road to the Etihad Stadium, reflecting the voices and legacies that have defined generations of fans.
A Tribute to Manchester City’s Black Legacy
Narrated by Lemn himself, the piece brings together the stories of current and former players, academy stars, and supporters, including:
-
Stan Horne, the first Black player to represent Manchester City
-
Nedum Onuoha, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Steph Houghton, Shaun Goater, and Paul Dickov
-
Jahmal Williams-Thomas, City Matters’ Black and Mixed Heritage representative
-
Bing Findlater, Equality and Inclusion Lead at the Official Supporters Club
-
Fans and staff from across the Manchester City community
Each voice contributes to a collective celebration of diversity, pride, and unity — themes that resonate deeply in both sport and society.
Lemn Sissay: A Manchester Icon
As the former Chancellor of the University of Manchester, Lemn Sissay’s connection to the city runs deep. His award-winning poetry and writing — including Gold from the Stone and the bestselling memoir My Name Is Why — have made him one of Britain’s most respected literary voices.
Speaking about the collaboration, Lemn said:
“Manchester felt like home to me the moment I stepped foot across the boundary. The first time I came to this city was to see Manchester City play. I want the poem to be owned by the person in the stand watching the game — and by the person on the pitch playing it. I want them to feel proud reading it.”
Watch The Stadium Speaks
The film is now available to watch across Manchester City’s official digital channels, inviting fans to reflect on the importance of representation, belonging, and heritage within football.
Manchester City continues to stand firmly against all forms of racism and discrimination, promoting equality, inclusion, and respect both on and off the pitch.
