INVESTIGATIVE PODCAST SERIES ‘THE SYRIA TRIALS’ RETURNS FOR SECOND SEASON TO TRACK THE DISAPPEARING GENERAL

Produced by 75 Podcasts,The Syria Trials‘ is an investigative podcast series which shines a light on the stories around the scattered landscape of justice and accountability. Focusing efforts to understand the atrocious crimes committed by the regime in Syria at a crucial point in the nation’s history.

Returning for a second season on the 23rd of October, ‘The Syria Trials: The Disappearing General’ will focus on the story of Brigadier General Khaled Al Halabi, looking at his work within the Syrian intelligence system, his role in violently suppressing the peaceful revolution and his escape to Europe after his city fell out of regime control.

Hosted by human rights lawyer and 75 Podcasts founder Fritz Streiff, the second season will ask two key questions: who is Halabi and why hasn’t he been arrested yet? While this season closely follows Halabi’s story, the stories of his victims and the peaceful protestors form a key narrative too.

Podcast producer, translator and educator Kristina Khagdo hosts the podcast’s sister edition in Arabic, ensuring the conversation around such vital topics is both available and owned by Syrian people and communities. While the Halabi story and other legal cases feature in this sibling production, the Arabic series is a conversational podcast in which Syrians discuss those justice priorities that are most pressing to them in this moment of so-called “normalisation” of the Syrian regime.

“We have launched this podcast to provide access to quality content, counter misinformation and to document these critical moments in history.  It’s been 12 years since the revolution and with the attempted normalisation of the regime there is still no end in sight.  However, the law is now picking up speed and trials for those involved are starting to take place and offer those affected some hope to pursue justice. In this new series we are covering the story of the highest ranking officer from the regime known to have made it to European soil. Brigadier General Khaled Al Halabi is still at large, likely in Vienna, but the evidence against him is stacking up. Is his arrest imminent? Let’s see!  As the situation continues to unfold we are looking at how he made it there and why he has avoided arrest so far.”
