HIKING HOLIDAYS 2026: WHY UK TRAVELLERS ARE CHOOSING ACTIVE, WELLNESS-FOCUSED BREAKS OVER POOLSIDE GETAWAYS

As UK travellers look ahead to 2026, the classic fly-and-flop holiday is being swapped for something far more energising. Instead of lounging poolside, Brits are prioritising active escapes, with hiking and wellness-focused breaks leading the way.

According to travel expert Jerry Rebbeck from Wheelwrights Holiday Cottages, demand for walking-based itineraries has surged – and the data backs it up.

Hiking Holidays Are Booming in 2026

“Holidays built around hikes and walks have become increasingly popular, and are set to be big in 2026,” says Jerry. “We’re seeing it first-hand with our own guests, with more people asking for itineraries built around walking routes or planning their trips around hikes in the first place.”

The trend is more than anecdotal. Google searches for “hiking holidays” have risen by 345% since February 2021, signalling a major shift in how travellers are planning their getaways.

Social media is amplifying the movement too. On TikTok, the hashtag #hikersoftiktok has generated more than 2,000 posts in the UK over the past three months alone – growing by 165% in that period as more people document their outdoor adventures.

It’s clear that active travel is no longer niche – it’s mainstream.

Why Hiking Holidays Are Good for Your Mental Health

Today’s travellers aren’t just chasing scenic views – they’re seeking mental restoration.

“Holiday goers are prioritising mentally restorative trips in 2026, seeking out holidays which will reduce stress and revitalise energy in an active way,” explains Jerry.

Hiking combines physical exercise, time away from screens and immersion in nature – a trio proven to boost mood and reduce stress. Studies from organisations such as Mind highlight how spending time outdoors can significantly improve mental wellbeing.

With burnout and digital overload becoming increasingly common, it’s no surprise that Brits are choosing hiking holidays to properly disconnect and return home refreshed.

What to Know Before Booking a Hiking Holiday

If you’re planning to tap into the 2026 hiking holiday trend, preparation is key. Here’s what Jerry recommends:

1. Choose Your Base Carefully

Location is everything.

“If you are staying in one place as a base and travelling from this point, you’ll want to be somewhere where you can access a range of hiking locations each day, whether that be on foot or by bus,” Jerry advises.

If you’re planning a multi-stop trip, mapping out routes in advance is essential. Factor in travel time, check-in windows and recovery days between longer hikes to avoid unnecessary stress.

2. Consider Everyone’s Ability

Hiking holidays should be inclusive and enjoyable for all.

“If there are a range of abilities, it’s always best to aim for easier terrain and shorter distances, so everyone can participate and enjoy themselves,” says Jerry.

Balancing ambition with accessibility ensures your trip feels rewarding – not exhausting.

3. Prioritise Safety and Preparation

While hiking is fantastic for physical and mental health, it requires sensible planning.

Jerry recommends:

  • Planning routes in advance

  • Carrying essentials such as a torch, first aid kit, compass and emergency equipment

  • Dressing appropriately for changing weather conditions

  • Allowing enough daylight to complete your hike safely

Resources like The National Trust and National Trails UK offer excellent guidance on routes, safety and preparation.

With the right groundwork in place, hiking holidays can be both invigorating and deeply relaxing.

Why the UK Is Perfect for a Hiking Holiday

The UK is uniquely positioned to capitalise on the hiking boom. With 15 national parks across England, Scotland and Wales, there’s an extraordinary variety of landscapes to explore.

“We are extremely lucky in the UK that we have 15 national parks, which serve as gorgeous backdrops for hiking holidays,” says Jerry. “From mountain routes to gentle riverside ambles, countryside paths to forest trails, there is something for every type of walker.”

One standout destination is the Lake District, which attracts visitors from around the globe. Its dramatic mix of mountains, valleys and lakes offers everything from family-friendly rambles to challenging summit climbs.

“Much like other UK national parks, the Lake District attracts visitors from all over the world to explore the multitude of trails,” Jerry adds. “The combination of mountains, hills and valleys makes it an ideal setting to clear your head and spend time outdoors.”

Crucially, it’s also highly accessible. Trails cater to all ages and abilities, making it ideal for family hiking holidays as well as more ambitious backpacking adventures.

The Future of Travel Is Active

As we move further into 2026, the shift towards wellness-driven travel shows no sign of slowing down. Hiking holidays offer something many travellers are craving: movement, mindfulness and meaningful connection with nature.

Whether you’re exploring the Lake District, discovering coastal paths in Cornwall or trekking through the Scottish Highlands, the UK’s diverse landscapes provide the perfect setting for an active escape.
