This May bank holiday, Londoners are being invited to step into a living artwork — and walk out with a free pint. Italian beer brand Peroni Nastro Azzurro is unveiling Il Fresco di Peroni, a striking Renaissance-inspired optical illusion installation landing in Covent Garden.
Running from Thursday 30th April to Saturday 2nd May (12:00–20:00), the immersive experience promises something you don’t usually get from a masterpiece: a perfectly poured beer.
Step Inside the Artwork (Yes, Literally)
Created by the artist collective Joy Collective, Il Fresco di Peroni blends classical Italian art with modern design and a playful twist. Inspired by Renaissance Rome, the large-scale installation transforms a traditional fresco into an interactive, mind-bending experience.
Visitors can physically step inside the artwork — where illusion meets reality — and be served a complimentary pint of Peroni directly from the piece itself. It’s part gallery, part bar, and entirely designed for a new kind of social experience.
Inspired by Italy’s Most Iconic Masterpieces
The installation forms part of a wider Peroni campaign celebrating Italy’s most recognisable cultural symbols. References include the legendary Trevi Fountain, Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, and the world-famous Scuderia Ferrari.
Each is playfully understated in true Italian fashion — described as “ONLY a fountain”, “ONLY a painting”, and “ONLY a car”.
Il Fresco di Peroni follows the same philosophy: it’s “only” a fresco… until it pours you a drink.
Why Aperitivo Culture Is Taking Over the UK
The launch taps into a noticeable shift in UK social habits. More people are ditching late nights in favour of early evening meet-ups — a trend backed by recent dining data. According to OpenTable, 6pm reservations in London have risen by 11%, while UK-wide bookings are up 6% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, hospitality tech company Zonal reports that the average UK dining time has moved earlier to around 6:12pm.
This aligns closely with Italy’s long-standing aperitivo tradition — a relaxed pre-dinner ritual centred on drinks, conversation, and style.
