RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Danny Beard has teamed up with method and celebrity hair stylist Mark Blake to give Britain’s hair wash day a seriously glamorous makeover.
For many of us, hair wash day is a routine we could probably complete with our eyes closed. Shampoo, rinse, conditioner, rinse, repeat. But new research suggests Brits could be missing out on the feel-good benefits of making more of the moment.
According to research commissioned by haircare brand method, 71% of Brits say freshly washed hair has a positive effect on their mood, yet 36% admit they wash their hair on “autopilot”. Even more surprisingly, 55% say they have followed the same hair wash routine since their teenage years.
Now, method is encouraging the nation to shake things up with method presents: Hairography, a choreographed hair-washing routine created with TV presenter and drag artist Danny Beard and celebrity hair stylist and trichologist Mark Blake.
What Is Hairography?
Combining big hair flips, scalp massages, swishes and movement, Hairography is designed to transform the everyday hair wash into a more joyful and expressive ritual.
Rather than rushing through the shower, the routine encourages people to put a little more energy into washing their hair – turning an ordinary chore into a moment of self-care and self-expression.
The idea comes as 35% of Brits say they would like to revamp their hair wash routine, while 41% would be interested in learning more about Hairography.
The research also found that 16% of people view washing their hair as a chore, describing it as repetitive and rushed.
Gen Z, however, appears to be bringing considerably more energy to the bathroom. Some 36% listen to music while washing their hair, 27% sing and 10% even dance.
Danny Beard Brings the Hair Flip
For Danny Beard, who won RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 4, hair has always been a major part of self-expression.
“I’ve built a career on confidence, self-expression and the power of a great hair flip,” Danny Beard said. “Hair isn’t just hair, it’s part of our identity, our energy and the way we tell the world who we are.”
The new routine is designed to make people slow down and enjoy the process, whether that means incorporating a few dramatic movements, taking time to massage the scalp or simply enjoying a moment of confidence.
Danny added that the partnership is about taking something people often rush through and turning it into “a moment of self-expression and joy”.
Why Your Hair Wash Routine Matters
Celebrity hair stylist and trichologist Mark Blake says that movement and proper cleansing can play an important role in caring for the hair and scalp.
According to Blake, taking a few extra minutes to properly work shampoo into the scalp, rinse thoroughly and massage the head can make a difference to both the hair-washing experience and how you feel afterwards.
The Hairography routine combines these principles with movement, incorporating scalp stimulation, hair flips and swishes into the process.
method x FRAME: Hairography Classes Are Coming to London
The campaign is also moving beyond the bathroom.
method has partnered with FRAME for a one-week Hairography takeover this September, with the first class led by Danny Beard taking place on Tuesday 15 September.
Further special-edition classes led by FRAME instructors will run from 16–23 September, giving participants the chance to experience the routine as a combination of workout, dance class and self-care session.
