Football fans backing England or Scotland this summer can now do so with a little less risk, thanks to a new initiative from Asda and its fashion brand George at Asda.
The retailer has launched “Shirt Happens”, a unique shirt swap scheme that allows customers to exchange selected football shirts for another clothing item if England or Scotland fail to reach the tournament final. Even better, the shirts can be returned after being worn throughout the competition – whether they’re covered in ketchup, beer spills or signs of matchday celebrations.
Asda Responds to Rising Football Shirt Prices
The promotion comes as new research commissioned by Asda reveals growing frustration among supporters over the cost of football merchandise.
According to the survey of 2,000 UK adults:
- 80% believe football shirts have become too expensive for the average fan.
- More than half have skipped buying a shirt because of the cost.
- 74% do not consider current football shirt prices affordable.
- Two in five worry about damaging an expensive shirt.
- 50% would rather wear a cheaper T-shirt during a match to avoid ruining their main kit.
With many official national team shirts now costing close to £100, affordable alternatives are becoming increasingly attractive to both die-hard supporters and casual tournament viewers.
What Is the ‘Shirt Happens’ Swap Scheme?
The Shirt Happens initiative applies to five selected George football-themed shirts, all priced at £12 or less. Eligible items include:
- Men’s Scotland Football FIFA Tee
- Men’s Three Lions England Tee (White)
- Men’s Three Lions England Tee (Red)
- Boys Scotland FIFA Tee
- Boys England FA Shirt
Customers who buy one of these shirts in-store can wear it throughout the tournament and, if England or Scotland are eliminated before the final, return it within 24 hours of their team’s exit in exchange for an Asda Gift Card equal to the original purchase price.
If either nation reaches the final, the promotion will end and no exchanges will be available. Returned shirts will be donated to charity.
Affordable Football Fashion for Casual Fans
Asda’s research also highlights the rise of the so-called “fair-weather fan” – people who only tune into football during major international tournaments.
The findings show:
- 44% of Britons feel wearing team colours helps them feel part of the occasion.
- The figure rises to 55% among casual tournament viewers.
- 46% of fair-weather fans would consider wearing a football shirt specifically for a major tournament.
- Half of all respondents said they would be more likely to buy a shirt if they could exchange it after the competition.
George’s football-inspired collection starts from just £5, offering a significantly cheaper alternative to official merchandise.
Asda: Football Should Be Accessible to Everyone
Speaking about the campaign, an Asda spokesperson said football shirts are a major part of tournament culture but fans should not have to spend a fortune to feel involved.
The retailer says the initiative is designed to give customers the confidence to wear, celebrate and enjoy their shirts throughout the tournament without worrying about wasting money if their team’s campaign ends early.
