TINDER LAUNCHES MANDATORY FACE CHECK IN THE UK TO COMBAT FAKE PROFILES AND DATING SCAMS

Match Group and its flagship app Tinder have announced the UK rollout of Face Check, a new facial verification feature designed to tackle fake profiles and reduce online scams.

The move comes as concerns around impersonation and digital fraud continue to rise—particularly among younger users navigating modern dating apps. From March 26, Face Check will become mandatory for all new UK users, marking a major shift in how online dating platforms approach identity verification.

What Is Tinder’s Face Check Feature?

Face Check is a facial verification system built directly into Tinder’s onboarding process. New users are required to record a short video selfie, allowing the app to confirm two key things:

  • The person is real and physically present
  • Their face matches their profile photos

Once verified, users receive Tinder’s Photo Verified badge, signalling authenticity to potential matches.

The feature also detects if the same face appears across multiple accounts—adding an extra layer of protection against impersonation and fraudulent activity.

Why Tinder Is Introducing Face Check Now

Recent research from Tinder reveals that 63% of 18–24-year-olds say scams are harder to spot than ever, highlighting the growing challenge of trust in digital spaces.

Face Check aims to directly address this issue by making identity verification seamless for genuine users while creating barriers for bad actors.

Markets where the feature has already launched—including the US, Canada, and Australia—have reported significant improvements:

  • Over 60% reduction in exposure to suspicious accounts
  • Over 40% decrease in reports of bad actors

These early results suggest that Face Check could redefine user expectations around safety in dating apps.

A New Standard for Dating App Safety

According to Yoel Roth, SVP of Trust & Safety at Match Group, Face Check represents a major breakthrough:

“It helps tackle one of the hardest problems online—knowing whether someone is real—in a way that feels seamless and effective.”

Industry leaders have also welcomed the rollout. Organisations like Stop Scams UK and NO MORE have praised the initiative for its focus on ethical innovation and user protection.

Tinder’s Wider Push for Safer Online Dating

Face Check is part of Tinder’s broader safety strategy, which now includes more than 20 features aimed at improving user experience and security.

Recent updates unveiled at Tinder Sparks 2026: Start Something New include AI-powered tools such as:

  • “Are You Sure?” – prompts users to reconsider potentially inappropriate messages before sending
  • “Does This Bother You?” – flags harmful messages and now includes an auto-blur feature

Powered by advanced language models, these tools go beyond simple keyword detection to better understand tone and context—encouraging more respectful interactions across the platform.

Redefining Trust in Digital Dating

With the introduction of Face Check, Tinder becomes the first major dating app to require facial liveness verification at signup, setting a new benchmark for trust and safety in the industry.

As online dating continues to evolve, features like Face Check reflect a growing demand for authenticity, accountability, and user control—ensuring that connections are not just easier to make, but safer too.
