New research reveals that Britain’s side-hustle scene is more creative than ever, as people across the UK turn passions into profit — from dressing up as clowns for children’s parties to working as rent-a-friends and even professional mourners.
According to the study, a staggering 69% of side hustlers say their gig helps them pay the bills, while 78% revealed their hustle is completely different from their day job. It’s clear that more people are finding financial freedom and creative fulfilment outside the traditional nine-to-five.
A Nation of Hidden Entrepreneurs
Despite the surge in micro-businesses, almost half (48%) of side hustlers don’t see themselves as small business owners — meaning they may be missing out on the benefits and resources designed to help them grow.
Tesco Mobile is working to change that. With an estimated four million businesses across the UK qualifying for small business phone contracts, the mobile network is spotlighting the country’s unsung entrepreneurs and helping them access flexible, affordable tools to stay connected.
“The UK’s side-hustle economy is thriving,” says Laura Joseph, Chief Customer Officer at Tesco Mobile. “From paranormal tours to food art and even writing breakup messages, there’s a real spirit of ingenuity and determination out there. We’re proud to support these savvy side hustlers with flexible, affordable business plans.”
Gen Z Leads the Charge
Unsurprisingly, Gen Z is at the forefront of the side-hustle boom, with 57% saying they’ve turned a personal passion into profit — compared to just 14% of those aged 60 to 80.
Nearly half (47%) of respondents say they started their side hustle simply for fun, yet 7% are earning over £10,000 per year from their side projects. With extra income (57%), flexibility (31%), and the ability to work solo (27%) topping the list of benefits, it’s no wonder many are considering making their hustle a full-time gig.
However, not everyone shouts about their side work — 30% of respondents admit they feel embarrassed sharing details about their unconventional income streams.
Working Anywhere, Anytime
The research also highlights that 29% of side hustlers work outside their homes — from cafés, parents’ houses, and even while travelling. On average, half of those surveyed dedicate up to 15 hours a week to their ventures, balancing creativity and income on their own terms.
And with 84% of small business owners believing side hustles are becoming the new normal, it’s safe to say Britain’s entrepreneurial spirit shows no signs of slowing down.
