THE BEGINNING OF A NEW TRADITION: LALIGA LAUNCHES FIRST-EVER RETRO MATCHDAY CELEBRATING FOOTBALL HERITAGE

From April 10 to 13, 2026, LaLiga will launch the first Retro Matchday in European football history — a landmark cultural and sporting initiative bringing together 38 clubs from LaLiga EA SPORTS and LaLiga HYPERMOTION.

This groundbreaking event will see clubs wear specially designed retro-inspired kits celebrating iconic moments from their history, transforming matchday football into a living museum of the sport’s evolution. The initiative also extends to referees, who will wear specially designed kits created through the Referees Technical Committee of the Real Federación Española de Fútbol.

Known as “A Living Legacy,” the campaign aims to connect generations of fans by turning club history into a tangible, wearable experience on the pitch.

Football Meets Fashion at MBFWMadrid

The official Retro Matchday kit collection will be unveiled on March 19 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid (MBFWMadrid), one of Europe’s leading fashion platforms.

This strategic presentation reinforces the growing relationship between football and fashion culture, placing club heritage at the centre of global creative conversations. By debuting the kits at fashion week, LaLiga is positioning football as not just a sport, but a lifestyle and cultural movement.

Jaime Blanco, Director of LaLiga’s Club Office, explained the significance of the initiative:

“The Retro Matchday is a unique opportunity to honour the history of our clubs and the symbols that have shaped generations of fans. It allows us to bring the past into the present while continuing to build experiences that emotionally connect with supporters.”

Matchday Activations Across Clubs and Competitions

During LaLiga EA SPORTS Matchday 31 and LaLiga HYPERMOTION Matchday 35, all 38 participating clubs will wear retro kits inspired by legendary designs from their past.

The project also forms part of LaLiga’s wider brand strategy to strengthen fan engagement through culture, nostalgia, and storytelling. Fans will be able to experience the campaign across stadiums, broadcast channels, and digital platforms.

Broadcast partners will feature retro-style visual graphics and dedicated storytelling elements, bringing the nostalgia-driven narrative directly to television and streaming audiences.

The Collection That Never Goes Out of Style

LaLiga describes the Retro Matchday kits as “the collection that never goes out of style.”

The designs reinterpret classic club identities using modern sportswear technology while preserving historic colour schemes, crests, and symbolic details that represent each club’s heritage.

The campaign also highlights the role of football heritage preservation through partners such as LEGENDS The Home of Football, an institution dedicated to protecting football history and culture worldwide.

A 360° Football Culture Experience

The Retro Matchday is more than just a visual transformation of matchday football.

The initiative will expand across:

  • Digital content storytelling

  • Physical fan experiences

  • Sponsorship activations

  • Legends and ambassador participation

LaLiga’s broader campaign, “42 Legacies, 42 Ways of Winning,” explores how football passion is passed from generation to generation through family traditions, regional identity, and club loyalty.

Global Cultural Impact Beyond Sport

The Retro Matchday initiative reinforces LaLiga’s position as one of Europe’s most culturally forward-thinking football leagues. By combining sport, fashion, and media storytelling, the league aims to broaden football’s audience and strengthen global engagement with Spanish football heritage.

Preserving Football History While Shaping the Future

The Retro Matchday represents a new era for football marketing and cultural storytelling. By turning history into contemporary fashion and live sporting spectacle, LaLiga is creating a model that other leagues may soon follow.

As football continues to evolve globally, initiatives like this ensure that the emotional connection between fans and clubs remains at the heart of the game.
