Autumn is in full swing, bringing shorter days, colder nights and of course, ‘cuffing season’, aka the time in which many singletons search for someone to connect with in the chillier months. And this has gotten bigger in the last year, with data revealing nearly half of single Brits now want a partner to face the cold with.
But the dating itinerary has changed. Those looking for love are cutting back on meals out with low-key dating fun, such as dinner dates at home, on the rise. So, to help singles navigate their plate like a pro, Dolmio has teamed up with Global Dating Expert and TikTok Star Jacob Lucas, to arm singles with top etiquette tips for the ultimate dinner dates.
“A big part of dating is eating together. Whether you’re at a restaurant or rustling up a romantic meal at home, how you come across can be the difference between giving your date the ‘ick’ or allowing an opportunity for sparks to fly. Though sharing a meal can be just as daunting as it is romantic, so I’m here to help.”

Jacob Lucas shares his top tips for ensuring singles have their best cuffing season yet:
- Get candid over the candles: Firstly, if you’re the one hosting, ensure there are candles lit on the dinner table. Then when it comes to the meal, ensure you lean in closer, because the candlelight makes pupils dilate, which is biologically proven to increase attractiveness.
- Keep it clean: Some foods are easier to consume than others in dating scenarios. But there’s a right way when it comes to the nation’s go-to homecooked dish, Spag Bol. Rather than using a knife and fork to cut your pasta or a spoon to shovel on, trust yourself and apply the twirl technique. Put the fork in your dominant hand and twirl the pasta around to make a nice, tidy mouthful. Take your time to complete the twirl and don’t overload it. Dab your mouth with a napkin after each mouthful to keep it classy and if you’re cooking, choose a sauce that sings and shows personality. Dolmio Original Bolognese Sauce is my go-to.
- Tailor the conversation: Be curious and ask questions but swap out some of the basics for a question that’s unique to them. For example, if you’re having dinner at theirs, ask what inspired a particular part of the décor or comment on a fun photo they’ve got displayed.
- Sharing is caring: Now I’m not necessarily talking about recreating a Lady and the Tramp scenario, but if you’re comfortable, have food on the table that you can share. Their brain will connect you with the positive feelings of eating. This could be a sharing bread to start or a bite of your spaghetti – you can even teach them the twirl technique in the process!
- End on a high: Always end the date on a high point, as people usually associate you with the last emotion you make them feel. Tell a joke, pay them a compliment, or share something fun about the day ahead. Whatever it is, close with the same energy you greeted them with.
