PIZZA PILGRIMS GOES GREEN WITH ITS LIMITED-EDITION CHE CAVOLO KALE PIZZA

Pizza Pilgrims is putting an unexpected ingredient in the spotlight this September with the launch of Che Cavolo, a limited-edition kale pizza created by this year’s Doughdown champion.

Kale might not be the first ingredient that springs to mind when you think of pizza, but Pizza Pilgrims is changing that this September.

The Italian-inspired pizza brand is going green with Che Cavolo, a brand-new limited-edition pizza available across its UK pizzerias from 31 August to 27 September 2026.

Priced at £15, the pizza is the winning creation of Pizza Pilgrims pizzaiolo Alessandro Romanelli, who took the top spot in the brand’s annual Doughdown competition.

Meet Che Cavolo: Pizza Pilgrims’ Kale Creation

Che Cavolo puts kale centre stage, combining it with a rich mix of Italian ingredients for a pizza designed to be comforting, indulgent and full of flavour.

The pizza features a creamy kale base topped with guanciale, fresh burrata and toasted panko, finished with a punchy lemon and olive oil dressing.

The result is Pizza Pilgrims’ playful take on elevating an everyday vegetable into something worthy of the centre of the menu.

And the name is just as playful as the pizza itself.

What does ‘Che Cavolo’ mean?

In Italian, Che cavolo! literally translates as “What cabbage!”, but the phrase is commonly used as a mild exclamation, similar to saying “What the heck!” or “Blimey!”

Romanelli has embraced the expression’s double meaning by making cavolo — in this case, kale — the star ingredient.

The pizza also reflects his Italian roots and his passion for taking humble ingredients and giving them a creative twist.

What Is Pizza Pilgrims’ Doughdown Competition?

Che Cavolo was created as part of Doughdown, Pizza Pilgrims’ annual competition celebrating the creativity of the pizzaiolos working across its restaurants.

Each year, pizzaiolos from across the country compete to create a pizza that could earn a place on the Pizza Pilgrims menu.

The finalists then face off in a live cook-off, with their creations judged across categories including flavour, texture, originality, appearance and execution.
