PICNICS ON PAUSE: 30% OF BRITS SAY CURRENT WASHOUT WEATHER HAS PUT THEM OFF ALFRESCO DINING THIS YEAR

Despite being a nation of grazers and sociable diners, almost a third (30%) of Brits are put off picnicking due to the unpredictable British summertime weather.

In fact, the unpredictable weather is the second biggest picnic bugbear for Brits. But battling the elements isn’t the only thing deterring from summer picnics, as pesky insects such as wasps and flies are also total downers for over a third (37%), whereas crowded areas are the biggest concern for almost a quarter (23%), according to new research from Sainsbury’s.

The nation’s top 5 picnic bugbears:

  1. Pesky insects, such as wasps and flies (37%)
  2. Unpredictable weather conditions (33%)
  3. Getting caught in a rain shower (24%)
  4. Crowded areas (23%)
  5. Not enough shade from the heat (21%)

It’s a sad thought for the 42% who name traditional picnics as their favourite way to dine throughout the summer months, above being cooked for by a friend or family member (24%) or a three-course meal (14%).

This National Picnic Week neither the weather, nor the wasps, will be raining on the picnic-parade, as the launch of Sainsbury’s Picnic Pavilion will be open for those who enjoy the idea of alfresco dining whilst grazing on beloved picnic staples. On Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd June, customers can enjoy dry bottoms and bug-less picnicking, with cosy seating, delicious food and drink, and summer tunes – it’s a no rainer!

Following the rise of TikTok trend “girl dinner” (which has had over 199.3M related TikTok posts) and dining on picky tea amongst Gen Z, the research revealed that 44% of the younger generation would opt for a picnic style picky tea over a sit-down meal. The opportunity to enjoy outdoor settings casual set up (31%), it being a great date (23%), sharing the cost (21%) and freedom to spontaneously plan (21%) were among some of the top reasons as to why they’re such fans of the traditional British pastime.

Dining styles aren’t the only things that have changed over the years, as picnic palettes have also evolved. In fact, 41% of Brits* say elevated salads, sushi, and pastries enhance a picnic, something that half (50%) of Gen Z swore by. But for over half of boomers surveyed* (51%), the classic sausage roll and Scotch egg are still the ultimate picnic staples. While just over one in 10 (11%) are all in agreement that soggy sandwiches are a concern about picnics.

To accommodate Brit’s changing picnic palettes and to put a spin on the traditional picky eating go-tos, Sainsbury’s new summer range features exciting new flavours as well as improved classics – including the Taste the Difference All Day Scotch Egg, Taste the Difference Extra Thick Tzatziki and Taste the Difference Sangria, all of which will be served at the Sainsbury’s Picnic Pavilion.

Claire Hughes, Sainsbury’s Director of Product & Innovation commented: “We’re used to the Great British weather keeping us on our toes, so this year we’re staying ahead of surprise forecast twists with the launch of Sainsbury’s Picnic Pavilion, offering Brits the chance to indulge in picnic perfection, with delicious ready-made bites from our new summer range in the comfort of the indoors.
