MGM+ ANNOUNCES RELEASE DATE FOR NEW COMEDY SERIES AMERICAN CLASSIC

Streaming platform MGM+ has officially confirmed the launch date for its upcoming original series American Classic, a heartfelt new comedy from creators Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin.

The eight-episode series will premiere on Saturday, 11 April, debuting with a double-episode release before continuing weekly until its finale on 23 May.

Blending theatrical flair with family drama, American Classic is set to explore fame, failure, and redemption through a deeply personal and often chaotic homecoming story.

What Is American Classic About?

At the centre of the series is Broadway star Richard Bean, played by Kevin Kline, whose career takes a dramatic turn following a very public meltdown. Forced to retreat from the spotlight, he returns to his roots — the family theatre where his ambition first took shape.

However, his return is far from peaceful. His unpredictable behaviour triggers tension across the family, including his ex-girlfriend — now the town’s mayor — portrayed by Laura Linney, who is now married to his brother (played by Jon Tenney).

As buried secrets resurface and old relationships reignite, the series unpacks the emotional fallout of Richard’s past decisions while highlighting the fragile bonds of family and community.

Each season will also revolve around a different theatre production staged by Richard, mirroring the evolving personal dramas and underscoring the transformative power of art.

Star-Studded Cast Brings Theatre and Drama Together

Alongside its central trio, American Classic features an impressive ensemble cast, including:

  • Len Cariou
  • Nell Verlaque
  • Jessica Hecht
  • Tony Shalhoub
  • Ajay Friese
  • Aaron Tveit

This mix of stage veterans and screen talent reinforces the show’s theatrical DNA, promising layered performances and character-driven storytelling.

Behind the Scenes: Creative Team & Production

American Classic is co-created and executive produced by Hoffman and Martin, with additional executive producers including Ellen Fairey and a team spanning multiple production companies.

The series is produced by FIFTH SEASON, alongside Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story, and Anonymous Content — all known for delivering high-quality, character-led projects.

Notably, lead actors Kevin Kline, Laura Linney, and Jon Tenney also serve as executive producers, bringing their creative insight directly into the storytelling process.

Why American Classic Could Be MGM+’s Next Must-Watch Series

With its blend of theatrical storytelling, emotional depth, and a high-calibre cast, American Classic is positioned to become a standout title in MGM+’s growing slate of originals.

The show’s exploration of identity, ego, and artistic legacy taps into timeless themes — while its episodic theatre productions offer a unique structural twist that sets it apart from traditional family comedies.

For audiences who enjoy character-driven dramas with a comedic edge, American Classic could be one of the most compelling new series of the spring.

Where to watch: American Classic premieres exclusively on MGM+ from 11 April, with new episodes released weekly.
