MERCATO METROPOLITANO ELEPHANT & CASTLE ANNOUNCES BIG MOVE — BUT THE PARTY ISN’T OVER YET

South London’s beloved food and culture hub, Mercato Metropolitano Elephant & Castle, is entering a new chapter — but not before one final, unforgettable summer.

After more than a decade at its current location, the iconic market has confirmed plans to relocate next door in autumn 2026, ahead of a major redevelopment. Until then, Londoners still have time to experience everything that’s made it a staple of the city’s social scene.

A Summer Send-Off with Outdoor Vibes

This spring and summer, the spotlight is firmly on Mercato’s expansive Outdoor Piazza — a space designed for long, laid-back days and lively evenings.

Expect a buzzing al fresco atmosphere complete with:

  • Outdoor terraces perfect for group hangouts
  • Bars serving everything from craft beer to margarita towers
  • Covered seating areas (because… British weather)
  • The quirky Crazy Boules experience — a playful mix of boules and crazy golf

It’s shaping up to be one of South London’s go-to outdoor destinations for 2026.

Global Street Food from Over 40 Independent Traders

Food remains at the heart of Mercato Metropolitano, with more than 40 independent traders serving up flavours from across the globe.

Highlights include:

  • West African and Caribbean dishes from Jollof Mama and Dub Pan
  • Rich, spice-led cuisine from Tandoori Tadkaa and Mazavaroo Club
  • Fresh Italian pasta and pizza options
  • Sweet treats like British desserts from Crumbled London and gelato from Badiani

Whether you’re craving comfort food or something new, there’s no shortage of options.

Bars, Cocktails and Late-Night Energy

Mercato’s bar scene is just as diverse as its food offering. Visitors can explore:

  • Sustainable wines at BeBeMe
  • Craft brews at Craft Beer
  • German pours at German Kraft
  • Cocktails from Central Cocktail Bar and Cocktail Caravan

For music lovers, The Temple of Art and Music (TAM) adds another layer to the experience — hosting live performances, open mic nights and karaoke, all while supporting emerging artists.

Events, Culture and Community

Beyond food and drink, Mercato Metropolitano continues to thrive as a cultural hotspot.

This summer’s programme includes:

  • Live music and DJ sets
  • Latino nights
  • World Cup screenings
  • Food pop-ups and craft fairs
  • Community initiatives like boxing clubs and kilo sales

It’s more than just a market — it’s a space where food, culture and community collide.

While the current site will close in its existing form later this year, Mercato Metropolitano isn’t going far. The brand will transition into a smaller, temporary neighbouring space, ensuring it remains a key part of the Elephant & Castle community.
