EE LAUNCHES UPGRADED SCAM GUARD: AI-POWERED FRAUD PROTECTION TACKLES RECORD UK SCAM SURGE

EE has unveiled its most advanced fraud prevention tool yet with the launch of an all-new Scam Guard, a £2-a-month add-on designed to help mobile users stay protected against increasingly sophisticated online scams powered by artificial intelligence.

The upgraded service arrives at a time when UK fraud is at an all-time high, with more than 444,000 cases recorded to the National Fraud Database in 2025, according to fraud prevention organisation Cifas. That marks the highest annual figure ever recorded and a 6% rise year-on-year—driven in part by criminals using AI to generate convincing phishing emails, fake websites, deepfake calls and highly targeted SMS scams.

A New Era of AI-Driven Mobile Security

Available to EE pay monthly customers on a 30-day rolling contract, the new Scam Guard builds on EE’s original 2024 launch and significantly expands its protection capabilities.

EE, part of BT Group, says the enhanced service reflects the growing complexity of digital threats and its ambition to set a new standard for network-level security in the UK mobile industry.

Since launching its original Scam Guard offering, EE has already blocked more than 169 million scam and spam attempts, and now expects the upgraded version to double that impact over the next 12 months.

What’s New in EE Scam Guard?

The upgraded service introduces a suite of AI-powered tools designed to protect users across every major digital touchpoint.

AI Triple-Lock Protection

At the core of Scam Guard is AI Triple-Lock Protection, powered by Norton’s Genie AI engine from Gen Digital (Norton), delivering three layers of real-time defence:

  • Safe Email – scans inboxes 24/7 to detect and flag suspicious messages before they’re opened
  • Safe SMS – identifies scam texts in real time, warning users before they interact
  • Safe Web – blocks malicious websites while users browse or shop online

Together, these features aim to stop scams before they reach the user, rather than reacting after the damage is done.

Scam Assistant and Smarter Call Protection

EE is also introducing Scam Assistant, a new tool that allows customers to upload screenshots of suspicious content—including texts, emails, websites, social media messages and even QR codes—for instant AI analysis.

Alongside this, Call Labelling provides automatic network-level screening of incoming calls, helping users identify potentially fraudulent numbers before answering.

These tools reflect a shift toward multi-channel scam detection, as fraudsters increasingly move between SMS, calls, email and social platforms.

Full Digital Safety: Device, Password and Dark Web Monitoring

Beyond messaging and browsing protection, Scam Guard also extends into broader digital security:

  • Mobile Device Security – protects against ransomware, viruses and malicious attachments in real time
  • Dark Web Monitoring – alerts users if their personal data appears on hidden or compromised networks
  • Social Media Monitoring – tracks suspicious activity across accounts
  • Password Manager – generates and stores secure passwords to reduce account vulnerability

Together, these features aim to give users a more complete safety net across their entire digital footprint.

Why EE Is Expanding Its Scam Protection Now

The launch comes amid a sharp rise in cybercrime sophistication. Fraud networks are increasingly using AI tools to scale attacks, making scams harder to detect and more personalised than ever.

EE says its upgraded Scam Guard reflects its broader commitment to customer protection and network security leadership in the UK telecoms space.

Malcolm Cubitt, Director of Product, Mobile at EE, said:

“Fraud in the UK is at record high, with AI making scams more convincing and harder to detect. As these threats evolve, we continue to adapt as the UK’s best network—constantly seeking new and innovative ways to protect and support our customers.”

Backed by BT Group’s Wider Security Investment

EE’s scam protection strategy is part of a wider security programme across BT Group, which has blocked:

  • 1.6 billion attempts to access malicious domains
  • 200 million scam SMS messages
  • 61 million scam calls
  • 175 million nuisance or fraud calls flagged

This large-scale network defence infrastructure underpins EE’s push toward proactive, AI-driven protection at scale.

How to Get EE Scam Guard

EE Scam Guard is now available to all EE pay monthly mobile customers for £2 per month on a rolling 30-day contract.

The Bigger Picture: Staying Safe in a Digital-First UK

As scams become more sophisticated, EE’s latest update highlights a wider industry shift toward embedding security directly into mobile networks rather than relying solely on user vigilance.
