Hidden just off King’s Road lies Kutir, easily one of London’s most captivating Indian dining rooms. It has unveiled its Hunter’s Expedition tasting menu, a showcase of game through the lens of Michelin-starred chef patron Rohit Ghai, known for his expressive cooking techniques. Drawing on textures, aromas, and flavours of seasonal ingredients, he creates masterpieces – much like this menu – which set his establishments firmly ahead of the rest.
Kutir, meaning “a small cottage” in Sanskrit, lives up to its name. The townhouse, tucked away behind an unassuming door on Lincoln Street, is designed to feel intimately homely yet luxurious and polished, like a calm retreat from the bustle of Chelsea. Downstairs, the kitchen hums quietly under the command of Ghai, who along with his long-time business partner Abhi Sangwan, has produced some of London’s most memorable interpretations of Indian cuisine, including Manthan in Mayfair and Vatavaran in Knightsbridge.
Kutir’s Expedition tasting menus take centre stage this autumn, offering a journey across the breadth of Ghai’s cuisine. The Signature Expedition spans land and sea, and includes dishes such as Salmon Mooli and Tandoori Lamb Chops, while the Vegetarian Expedition Menu features elevated plant-based dishes such as Aloo Tikka with Honey Yoghurt and Plantain Korma.
The brand new Hunter’s Expedition is devoted to game, offering an ambitiously unique take of Britain’s most characterful meats. Dishes include Partridge Khurchan with puff bread and pumpkin chutney, Quail Buttermilk with almond and harissa, Venison Boti Kebab with clarified butter and peanut thecha, and a choice between Guinea Fowl Korma with cashew and onion and Duck Madras with tamarind and curry leaf. The dishes are served alongside staples of Kaali Dal, steamed rice, and butter naan, with a choice of two desserts of a Chocolate Peanut Slice with Valrhona ganache, crumble and hazelnut, and the Date Pecan Cinnamon with kulfi caramel and pistachio.
Rohit Ghai’s expertise in handling game, a protein notoriously prone to drying out, is notably impressive. His technique ensures each dish retains succulence and depth, setting Kutir apart from other restaurants attempting similar initiatives. Standout dishes include the Venison Boti Kebab, where charred clarified butter and rich peanut thecha add striking texture to every bite, and the Guinea Fowl Korma, which balances delicate flavours with indulgent creaminess. The menu closes with a Valrhona chocolate and peanut slice, topped with a thick ganache, a final testament to the consistent quality and meticulous attention to detail from first course to last.
Since opening in 2018, Kutir has held its ground as one of Chelsea’s most distinguished haunts, yet still impressively hidden from the mainstream. Set across two floors with 80 covers, plus a 14-seat upper terrace, the restaurant’s design and atmosphere evoke the warmth and charm suggested by its name, while allowing the cuisine to take centre stage. Complemented by an extensive wine list and thoughtfully crafted cocktails which incorporate its heritage, Kutir offers more than just a delicious dinner – it delivers an immersive destination for discovery and travel, all from the comfort of its cosy West London home.
