Emmy Award-winning actor Jon Hamm is heading back to television in the gripping new psychological thriller American Hostage, which is set to premiere internationally on MGM+ across the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Latin America, and Spain in a second-window release.
Produced by Sony Pictures Television, the series is co-created and executive produced by Emmy Award nominee Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers. The project adapts the acclaimed scripted podcast of the same name into a tense, character-driven thriller inspired by real events.
What Is American Hostage About?
Set during the 1970s, American Hostage tells the true story of Indianapolis radio reporter Fred Heckman, played by Hamm, who becomes entangled in a dangerous hostage crisis after gunman Tony Kiritsis demands a live interview on Heckman’s popular radio programme.
The series explores the escalating psychological tension between journalist and hostage-taker, unfolding in real time as authorities attempt to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control.
According to MGM+ global head Michael Wright, the project combines a compelling real-life story with an impressive creative team:
“This is a fascinating story about real people engaged in a real-time life-or-death struggle to keep a desperate hostage situation from spinning out of control.”
Jon Hamm Leads an All-Star Cast
Alongside Hamm, the series features a strong ensemble cast led by Giovanni Ribisi as Tony Kiritsis. Additional cast members include:
- Mireille Enos as Barbara Heckman
- Kristoffer Polaha as Dick Hall
- William Jackson Harper as Ben Hairston
Recurring cast members include:
- Jonathan Tucker as FBI Special Agent Cormac McNally
- Kat Cunning as Ibby Hall
From Podcast Success to Prestige Television
The television adaptation is based on the hit scripted podcast American Hostage, which gained attention for its immersive storytelling and tense recreation of the real-life hostage incident involving Tony Kiritsis.
With Shawn Ryan — known for acclaimed crime dramas such as The Shield and S.W.A.T. — attached as co-showrunner, expectations are high for the adaptation’s mix of suspense, emotional intensity, and grounded realism.
MGM+ Expands Its International Originals Line-Up
