ICONIC BRITISH TV ADVERTS TAKE OVER OUTERNET LONDON IN LANDMARK FREE EXHIBITION

British television advertising is getting its long-overdue moment in the spotlight. A major new free exhibition at Outernet London is set to showcase the most iconic UK TV adverts of the past 50 years, bringing together nostalgia, pop culture and creative excellence in one immersive experience.

Titled Ads of the Years, the exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of the British Arrows, one of the world’s most prestigious advertising awards bodies. Running at Outernet London, the UK’s most visited cultural attraction, the retrospective celebrates the adverts that have defined generations — from 1976 to the present day.

A 360° Celebration of British Advertising History

The Ads of the Years exhibition features 68 iconic TV commercials, all selected from the British Arrows archive. These adverts will be displayed across 7,000 square metres of Outernet’s state-of-the-art 16K screens, creating a four-storey-high, floor-to-ceiling, fully immersive visual experience.

Visitors will be surrounded by five decades of British creativity, storytelling and innovation — showcasing how advertising has reflected social change, shaped popular culture and launched global careers.

You can learn more about the venue at the official Outernet London website.

From Parker Pens to Nike: Adverts That Defined Eras

The exhibition brings together some of the most memorable TV adverts ever broadcast in the UK. Early classics include:

  • Parker Pens – “Finishing School” (1976), directed by Sir Alan Parker and starring Penelope Keith

  • Courage Best – “Gercha” (1980), featuring Chas and Dave

  • LEGO – “Kipper” (1981), narrated by Tommy Cooper

These sit alongside modern cultural touchstones such as:

  • Levi’s – “Creek” (1994), which propelled indie band Stiltskin to a UK number one

  • Cadbury – “Gorilla” (2008), inspired by Phil Collins

  • Nike – “Nothing Beats a Londoner” (2019), starring Giggs, Skepta, Harry Kane, Mo Farah and Dina Asher-Smith

The exhibition also highlights how advertising has tackled serious social issues, from challenging taboos around menstruation to opening conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.

Vote for the Greatest British TV Advert of All Time

As part of the exhibition, visitors and fans can vote for their favourite advert of the last 50 years. The winner will be announced in March as the first-ever People’s Arrow Award.

Voting is open now via the official British Arrows website, where the full list of nominated adverts can also be explored. Many of the featured commercials are available to watch on the British Arrows YouTube channel.

An Industry That Shapes Culture — and the Economy

Beyond nostalgia, the exhibition shines a light on the continued importance of UK advertising. The industry currently supports 1.7 million jobs, accounting for 5% of UK employment, and has been identified by the government as a key growth sector in its Modern Industrial Strategy.

The UK is also the second-largest exporter of advertising globally, after the US, contributing £109 billion in indirect Gross Value Added to the wider economy.

Simon Cooper, Chairman of British Arrows and owner of Academy Films, says the exhibition reflects how advertising has become part of the national memory:

“British television advertising is recognised as the best in the world, offering a compelling and entertaining reflection of popular culture. These adverts define eras, spark conversation and stay with you forever.”

A Launchpad for Legendary Filmmakers

Moving-image advertising has long been a proving ground for some of Britain’s most celebrated filmmakers, including Alan Parker, Ridley Scott and Jonathan Glazer, as well as contemporary directors such as Kim Gehrig and Lucy Forbes.

The British Arrows continues to nurture emerging talent through initiatives like the Young Arrows Awards, ensuring the next generation of creatives are inspired by the industry’s rich legacy.

Jessica Dracup-Holland, CMO at Outernet, adds:

“British advertising is one of our most powerful creative forces. This exhibition celebrates an industry that not only drives the UK economy but uses creativity for good — changing behaviours and saving lives.”

Ads of the Years: A Must-See Cultural Moment

Blending nostalgia, innovation and cultural commentary, Ads of the Years at Outernet London is a rare chance to experience the adverts that shaped British life — all on a monumental scale and completely free to the public.

Whether you grew up quoting these ads or are discovering them for the first time, this exhibition offers a vivid reminder of why British advertising remains world-leading.
