37% of Brits are incorporating ‘Home Hacks’ into their daily routines according to new research from the world’s longest-running home & interiors exhibition, Ideal Home Show.
The research, designed to discover the ways Brits are increasing the longevity of their household goods as it has been revealed that over eight in 10 (82%) of Brits have used a home hack at some point in their life.
And they seem to be working, as a fifth (20%) of the nation claim that ‘home hack’ tricks have extended the lifespan of household items by a few months, (21%) and in some cases, years (11%) – these shortcuts are perfectly aimed at simplifying daily tasks and prolonging the lifespan of household items.
The success in using these tricks is clear to see, as only 8% of Brits have claimed that home hacks have not extended the lifespan of their household items at all.
The top ‘home hacks’ the nation use are:
- White vinegar and water to de-limescale a kettle (22%)
- Placing baking soda in the fridge to combat odours (19%)
- Using washing up liquid on windows to prevent condensation (17%)
- Folding sheets into matching pillowcases (16%)
- Cleaning pans with Alka-Seltzer tablets (6%)
- Using mouthwash to clean your toilet bowl (5%)
- Spraying vinegar into smelly shoes to reduce odour (5%)
- Fixing a hole in a window with clear nail polish (4%)
- Spraying dry shampoo on suede to remove stains (3%)
- Teabag in grease-filled pan (3%)
- Freezing your jeans to avoid denim fade (3%)
With so many Brits integrating home hacks into their weekly routines, it seems like social media is the place to find the latest tricks. TikTok (16%), Facebook (16%) and YouTube (12%), are the most popular – with only 2% attempting to find home hacks from grandparents.
However not everyone is convinced, many Brits (14%) express skepticism and nearly one in 10 (7%) have experienced home hacks gone wrong. Nearly one fifth of the nation (19%) don’t trust the methods and would never consider using them.
