How to make your kitchen more sustainable this World Environment Day

With World Environment Day (5th June) fast approaching, there’s never been a better time to make eco-friendly  choices in your home. The annual event, which is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), encourages people across the globe to protect the planet.

Homeowners are already showing signs of making more sustainable investments in their homes. According to recent Google Trends data, searches for ‘energy efficient kettles’ have increased by 100 percent in the past 12 months, while searches for ‘green technology’ and ‘boiling hot water taps’ have increased by 80 per cent and 70 per cent respectively over the past 12 months.

Magnet has shared its top tips on how to make your kitchen more sustainable ahead of World Environment Day this year.

RECYCLE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE

Recycling is a simple and easy way of helping the planet and minimising the amount of waste sent to landfill. In our busy lives, it can often be easy to forget about the importance of recycling. Consider incorporating a dedicated recycling bin in your kitchen to help make recycling hassle-free and easier to sort through. Magnet’s pull-out Ninka bin, for example, contains two separate waste compartments and fits into a kitchen cupboard to keep rubbish orderly and out of sight.

INVEST IN BOILING WATER TAPS

Boiling water taps are an optimal way of saving energy in the home, which has a positive impact on the planet. Homeowners often have a tendency to overfill kettles and heat more water than is needed to make a cup of tea or coffee. However, boiling water taps are much more energy efficient as they only heat the water that is needed. This smart kitchen appliance will not only save you time, but it will also help to keep those rising energy bills as low as possible.

OPT FOR NATURAL MATERIALS IN YOUR KITCHEN

Another way of making your kitchen more sustainable is by using natural materials in your design. Consider showcasing the best of natural materials, including wood and stone, in your worktops, kitchen cabinets and flooring for a more sustainable kitchen design. Magnet’s Nordic Nature range, for example, features stylish oak-veneer frontals and cabinets, making it the perfect choice for homeowners looking to invest in a more environmentally friendly kitchen design.

Lizzie Beesley, Head of Design at Magnet, said:

“We have seen a noticeable increase in enquiries for sustainable kitchens over the past year, with homeowners looking to incorporate energy efficient appliances and sustainable materials into their kitchens more than ever before. Sustainability is a crucial part of our quality promise at Magnet. All of our kitchen cabinets are made from Forest Stewardship Council® certified materials, making them as environmentally friendly as possible. Our kitchen designs are also often inspired by the beauty of the natural world. Our Scandi-inspired Nordic Nature range, for instance, hones in on the popular Scandinavian belief of looking after things, rather than continually buying brand new items.”
