From the great “cushion chop” controversy to the nightly ritual of removing cushions from the bed (only to carefully replace them again each morning), Homesense, the quality homeware brand at savvy prices, is diving headfirst into one of the UK’s most passionately debated homeware topics: cushions. And the results? It turns out these soft furnishings are causing some seriously hard feelings.
New research from Homesense reveals that the average cushion count per household is eight but nearly half of Brits (46%) said they have had household debates over décor preferences, including a quarter (24%) saying their cushion preferences have caused tension. The Great Cushion Debate is a nationwide domestic dilemma, and Homesense is stepping in to settle it — inviting the nation to share their views on one of the UK’s most hotly contested (yet quietly debated) home accessories via Homesense’s socials.
Whether you’re a maximalist with 40+ scatter cushions or a minimalist who thinks even one cushion is too many, one thing’s clear: we’re a nation obsessed with soft furnishings.
Homesense has also revealed that cushions are far more than just decorative, they’re central to everyday home rituals. Over half of Brits (79%) admit to quietly readjusting cushions after someone else has arranged them, and nearly a third of Brits (29%) admit to removing or hiding a cushion that didn’t suit the aesthetic. From styling choices to silent edits, cushions are shaping more than just our sofas – they’re shaping how we live together.
The “cushion chop” remains one of the UK’s most quietly divisive styling habits, with nearly half (49%) of Brits still liking it. London leads the chop-loving charge with 75% in favour, while the Southwest is more resistant, with nearly a quarter (24%) saying they’re firmly anti-chop. It’s clear: when it comes to cushions, personal style still rules.
With The Great Cushion Debate already sweeping the nation, sofa-loving celeb Scarlett Moffatt is joining the conversation, sharing her personal preferences and sparking even more chatter from sofas at home to sofas on screen.
Scarlett Moffatt, sofa loving celebrity said:
“It’s so funny how something as simple as cushions can get people talking. Whether it’s how many you have on your bed, where they go, or even if you ‘chop’ them or not. I think we’ve all had these little home debates, which is why I love that Homesense is helping settle them. If you head to Homesense on Instagram you can have your say in the comments.”
Homesense has also found that cushions are just the beginning when it comes to wider household debates. Brits are quietly engaged in a nationwide game of subtle home edits. A whopping 71% admit to switching off the “big lights” after someone else turns them on – opting instead for the soft glow of lamps and fairy lights to set the mood.
The lighting tensions, however, are just one front. Over half (52%) admit to reloading the dishwasher after someone else has stacked it, and 63% admit to readjusting clothes on the drying rack. 76% have adjusted the TV volume or switched on subtitles after the person they live with has used it, and 65% have reopened or closed the blinds to restore domestic equilibrium.
With all these preferences, Homesense is here to help you create a home you truly love – without compromise. Whether you’re a cushion collector, a lighting minimalist, or just someone who wants to find the perfect piece that sparks joy, Homesense offers a treasure trove of high-quality homeware and designer brands at irresistible prices.
