Gumtree UK, the online re-commerce platform, has partnered with YouTube sensation, Amelia Dimoldenberg, to be its very own Hype Girl For Hire. With a third of those surveyed (34%) admitting they bought something in lockdown they now want to get rid of, Amelia will be on hand to help, using her bespoke hype services to highlight some of the many Good Finds the platform has to offer. However, the message from Amelia and Gumtree is clear: you don’t need clichéd sales techniques to sell quality items on the platform. This is a ‘rent-a-celebrity’– but not as you know it.

The tongue-in-cheek campaign comes as almost two thirds (61%) of the nation admit that cheesy, celebrity sales tropes fail to influence their shopping decisions. With that in mind, no-frills Amelia is the perfect Hype Girl. Those looking for the usual glitz and glamour of a celebrity endorsement need not apply; famous for her dry disposition – and love of fried chicken – comedian Amelia’s unique service is sure to shift any lockdown purchase for struggling sellers.

To give a taste of Amelia’s unique Hype Girl skills, Gumtree has created a short film starring the YouTube star, in which she (un)enthusiastically hypes items typically bought and sold on the platform, including, a sofa “you can really just relax” on, and a car, that “looks exactly like a car.”

Gumtree’s Hype Girl, Amelia Dimoldenberg, commented: “I’m not surprised Gumtree has hired me to help people sell their stuff. I’m a really great Hype Girl and everyone knows people don’t really buy things unless they’re told to by a superstar. I’m a household name (depends on whose house), so if you want to sell your stuff, then hire me as your Hype Girl. I’m excited to Hype-Up-Your-Life so tell me what you want hyping and I’ll pretend to care about it.”

The Hype Girl campaign launches as Gumtree research, conducted by 3Gem, found that over half of sellers (52%) are unsure they are setting the right price for an item and a quarter (28%) worry their advert isn’t snappy enough.

Gumtree is on a mission to put its 20 years of experience to work and help make buying and selling second hand simpler, safer and more enjoyable by pairing buyers and sellers across the UK with Good Finds. With 76 million visits to the platform every month, many Gumtree users successfully make Good Finds without the need for a Hype Girl, as talented as Amelia is.

Over the past 18 months, many of us have transformed our homes into multi-functional spaces, with makeshift pubs appearing in gardens, kitchen tables making way for school rooms or pop-up offices, bedrooms doubling up as gyms, and hallways becoming havens for the collectibles as we’ve developed new interests to cope with lockdown restrictions.  With a return to normality hopefully on the horizon, over half (52%) of those selling items say they are doing so to reclaim space in their homes, while a third (33%) want the items gone so their homes can feel normal again.
