Distributed in the UK and Ireland by Bulldog Film Distribution, the powerful debut feature from filmmaker Sarah Friedland has already established itself as one of the most celebrated independent films of recent years following an impressive festival run and multiple international awards.
An Award-Winning Debut That Captivated Venice
Familiar Touch first gained widespread attention at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, where it earned three major honours: Best Director, Best Debut Film and Best Actress. Director Sarah Friedland later received the Someone To Watch Award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, cementing her reputation as one of independent cinema’s most exciting new voices.
The film has since attracted praise from critics for its compassionate and deeply human portrayal of dementia, while avoiding many of the conventions typically associated with stories about cognitive decline.
What Is Familiar Touch About?
The story follows Ruth Goldman, an older woman living with dementia who leaves her home believing she is heading out on a date. Instead, she finds herself arriving at what she slowly realises is an assisted living facility.
As Ruth navigates unfamiliar routines, new relationships and shifting perceptions of reality, she struggles to understand her place in the community around her. While resisting connections with fellow residents, she develops meaningful bonds with care workers and gradually rediscovers a sense of purpose through cooking and everyday sensory experiences.
Told entirely from Ruth’s perspective, the film offers an intimate examination of ageing, memory and selfhood, highlighting the idea that even as circumstances change, a person’s identity remains intact.
Inspired by Real-Life Care Work
The project was inspired by Sarah Friedland’s experiences working in memory care and teaching older adults. The film was created in collaboration with residents and care workers at a Los Angeles retirement community, bringing an unusual level of authenticity to its portrayal of later life and dementia care.
Critics have praised the film’s sensitive approach, with Little White Lies describing it as “a stunning, sensory-forward portrait of a woman with dementia”, while The New York Times highlighted the balance of tragedy and hope within the narrative.
Cast and Creative Team
Leading the cast is Kathleen Chalfant as Ruth Goldman, delivering a performance that has been widely celebrated throughout the film’s festival journey.
She is joined by:
- Carolyn Michelle Smith (Russian Doll, The Chi)
- Andy McQueen (Outer Banks, Fahrenheit 451)
- H. Jon Benjamin (Bob’s Burgers, Master of None)
The film was written and directed by Sarah Friedland and marks her feature directorial debut.
