EXPERIAN AND NATIONAL LITERACY TRUST LAUNCH “LIBRARY OF NO RETURNS”

A new immersive pop-up experience is set to shine a spotlight on the connection between childhood reading and financial wellbeing, as Experian teams up with National Literacy Trust to launch The Library of No Returns.

Designed to inspire a love of reading while addressing barriers to book access, the fairytale-themed initiative is backed by Britain’s Got Talent star and children’s author Alesha Dixon. The campaign aims to highlight a powerful but often overlooked link: strong literacy skills in childhood can lead to better financial confidence later in life.

A Story That Starts With Reading

At the heart of the campaign is a simple but impactful message—the earlier children engage with reading, the stronger their future outcomes can be.

New analysis from Experian, examining millions of UK credit profiles alongside literacy vulnerability data across constituencies, reveals a clear correlation between literacy levels and financial health. In areas with the highest literacy challenges, average credit scores fall 6% to 12% below the UK average of 850.

Further research from the National Literacy Trust reinforces this connection:

  • Children with strong reading skills are four times more likely to have good financial capability
  • Those in the lowest reading bracket are six times more likely to struggle financially

This growing body of evidence positions literacy as a foundational life skill—not just for education, but for long-term economic wellbeing.

Inside the “Library of No Returns”

The pop-up experience will debut at Pelsall Community Centre in Walsall, transforming the venue into a magical storytelling space for families.

Visitors can expect:

  • A curated selection of children’s books
  • Live storytelling sessions hosted by Alesha Dixon
  • Appearances from authors including Steve Antony and Monika Singh Gangotra
  • Free books for children to take home and keep

Alongside the literary focus, Experian representatives will be on hand offering informal guidance to parents and carers on building financial confidence—creating a space where storytelling meets practical life skills.

Why Literacy Matters More Than Ever

The campaign arrives at a critical moment for reading engagement in the UK:

  • 1 in 10 children aged 5–18 do not own a book
  • This rises to 1 in 6 in disadvantaged communities
  • Only 33% of children say they enjoy reading in their free time—the lowest level since 2005

These figures underline the urgency of initiatives like the Library of No Returns, which aim to make reading both accessible and enjoyable again.

A Nationwide Effort to Boost Literacy

The Walsall launch is just the beginning. The wider campaign will distribute over 5,000 books to communities with lower literacy levels, with upcoming activations planned in:

  • Stoke
  • Merthyr Tydfil
  • Nottingham

A donation drive via The Big Give will also support the initiative, with Experian matching public contributions to expand the National Literacy Trust’s outreach.

Building Better Futures Through Books

Speaking on the campaign, Alesha Dixon emphasised the long-term impact of literacy:

“If we can help children fall in love with books now, we’re not just inspiring imagination—we’re helping build the confidence and skills that shape their financial futures.”

By blending storytelling, community engagement, and financial education, the Library of No Returns is positioning literacy as a gateway to opportunity—helping ensure that every child has the tools to write a better future.
