Formula 1 fans were treated to a heartwarming moment this week as legendary Sky Sports F1 commentator David Croft stepped away from the commentary box and into a family living room in Ipswich. The surprise visit marked the launch of the brand-new Supercar Showdown Scalextric set, a release already buzzing within the motorsport and toy collector communities.
The stunt was part of Scalextric’s nationwide search for the UK’s biggest Formula 1 fan—a social media campaign that saw 15-year-old Kyle Pearce chosen thanks to a nomination from Jag, a close family friend. Kyle, who shares a strong passion for motorsport with his stepdad Chris, had no idea that his favourite F1 voice—known affectionately as Crofty—would be turning up on his doorstep.
That bond over racing made the moment even more special. Not only did Kyle receive his first-ever Scalextric set, but he also had Croft himself providing live commentary as he and Chris battled it out in their inaugural home race.
Chris and Kyle described the moment:
“We couldn’t believe it when Crofty walked into our home. At first, we thought it had to be some kind of joke. Getting our first Scalextric set to race together was amazing, but having David commentate on that first showdown made it unforgettable. We can’t wait for more battles on the track.”
David Croft shared the sentiment, adding:
“It’s not often I get to swap the roar of the grid for the buzz of a living room track. We had a fantastic morning! Seeing Kyle’s face light up and hearing the competitive banter with Chris reminded me exactly why I fell in love with racing in the first place.
