A routine after-school football session in London turned into a moment of disbelief and joy when England and Arsenal WFC star Chloe Kelly dropped in to deliver life-changing news. The Lioness hero revealed that the grassroots organisation Saving Souls Hub had been awarded £8,815 in National Lottery funding via Sport England.
The emotional surprise left students and staff stunned — and in tears — as Kelly explained how the grant will help expand inclusive football sessions for girls and women at the school.
Supporting women and girls through sport
Saving Souls Hub is a community-driven project promoting wellbeing, inclusion, and empowerment through sport. The new funding will help the group develop non-committal football opportunities that encourage girls to participate without pressure, while also launching educational workshops for boys and men to foster respect and appreciation for women’s sport.
“I remember when my local club received National Lottery funding to upgrade our facilities and what a huge impact that grant made on my community,” said Chloe Kelly, a National Lottery Ambassador. “I know what a positive difference it will be for this next generation — all thanks to National Lottery players across the UK.”
A boost for community wellbeing
Saving Souls Hub founder Kerry Phillips expressed gratitude for the funding, highlighting its role in building confidence and community among young women.
“This investment allows us to keep growing our programme, giving girls a safe and empowering space to play, bond, and thrive,” said Phillips. “Chloe Kelly’s visit was a powerful reminder of how visibility and support can change lives.”
Simon Hayes, CEO of Sport England, added:
“All women and girls should enjoy the physical, mental and social benefits of sport. The gender activity gap remains stubborn, which is why organisations like Saving Souls Hub are vital.”
Since 1994, National Lottery players have helped raise over £50 billion, supporting more than 650,000 community projects across the UK — from grassroots football to arts and heritage initiatives.
Celebrating everyday heroes
The announcement forms part of The National Lottery’s “Because of You” campaign, fronted by Claudia Winkleman, which celebrates inspiring community projects ahead of the Lottery’s 31st birthday in November.
Every week, National Lottery players raise over £30 million to fund local initiatives across every UK postcode.
