Capsule Wardrobe Packing Guide

With summer right around the corner, hopefully you have a plan for a few fun weekend getaways or vacations. For a lot of us, the most difficult part of leaving for vacation is packing a bag that does not weigh too much, but still has everything you need. Here is your guide for using the capsule wardrobe strategy to ensure you pack everything you need for the perfect trip!

What is the capsule wardrobe?

You might have heard the term “capsule wardrobe” floating around but perhaps never really understood what it meant. A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of clothing and accessories all able to mix and match well together to create multiple different looks. Carefully selecting a capsule wardrobe when packing can help you save space and money, but still allow you to have multiple looks to show off.

Tops

One word, texture. When working with a neutral color palette, pieces with texture and dimension are going to be your best friend. Look for some short sleeve shirts with texture such as ruffles or ruching, or even sweater vests to layer with. Bring some staple button down tops that are would be able to be worn on their own or under any tops or sweatshirts. Also always bring at least one sweater that can be thrown over any dress or top and easily tied around your shoulders when it gets warmer in the day

Pants

For pants it is important to have a good mix between casual and easy to dress up. Linen pants in a neutral color are perfect for any trips to a tropical climate and can be paired with a bathing suit during the day and a nice top at night. For a colder climate or more active trip consider these pants from Uniqlo that are the perfect light jean material to keep you warm and comfortable all day and night long.

Dresses

Dresses often are able to fold up smaller so consider bringing a few more in exchange for fewer pants and tops. Bring at least one long dress for either a warmer day or a nicer dinner. A shorter dress that is more form fitting can also be worn on its own or tucked into a pair of pants to make it more versatile. Since dresses are worn on their own this is where you should play with more colors and patters that you enjoy.

Jackets

In order to still pack lightly, really think about if you need a jacket or not. If you do, choose one that can fold up smaller like a light rain jacket or a quilted jacket. Steer away from jean jackets or big coats as they take up a lot of space. Jackets are also a great way to add some color to the neutral pallet so maybe pick one with colors or patterns.

Shoes

For a lot of people picking out which shoes you want is the hardest part of packing. The best advice would be to limit yourself to two pairs of shoes. Have a pair of sneakers that are cute but also comfortable if you are going to be doing a lot of walking. My favorite pair are the white New Balance CT302. Then have a pair of nicer shoes that you can wear if you are going to the beach or out to a nice dinner. For this I would recommend platform sandals- cute and comfortable!

Accessories

Arguably the most important part of the capsule wardrobe is the accessories. When you are wearing neutral colors and similar styles of all the time, accessories are the perfect way to spice up any outfit. Sunglasses are definitely a must and play around with them being a fun color or a shape you might not normally wear. For jewelry experiment with chunky rings and bracelets, it will add a nice pop of color and draw attention.

Working with a neutral color pallet can be tricky and get a bit boring, but there are way to make it more fun! Play around with different textures and colors that can help take any outfit from basic to exciting! If you have limited space and time, packing in the capsule wardrobe style can save you a lot of stress and extra money for an overweight bag.
