A Legacy of Orthopedic Innovation
BIRKENSTOCK’s shoemaking heritage dates back to 1774, but it was in 1897 that Konrad Birkenstock revolutionized footwear with the development of an anatomically shaped wooden shoe last and the creation of orthopedic insoles tailored to individual needs. This philosophy of foot health and innovation remains at the heart of the brand today.
While BIRKENSTOCK is now synonymous with iconic sandal styles like the ARIZONA, MADRID, and BOSTON, its early vision centered around closed shoes designed for optimal foot health. In the 1930s, Carl Birkenstock advanced this vision with the development of the “IDEAL SHOE”—a highly customized closed shoe designed to promote natural walking and optimal foot alignment. Though never mass-produced, this concept laid the foundation for the brand’s ongoing innovation.
It was Karl Birkenstock who, in 1963, introduced the first sandal with a built-in footbed, marking a turning point for the brand. His one-strap MADRID sandal set the stage for future sandal and clog designs and led to the launch of the LONDON in 1986, BIRKENSTOCK’s first closed shoe with an integrated footbed—a return to its origins.
A Global Leader in Footwear Innovation
From its beginnings as a family-run workshop to its status as a global leader in orthopedic footwear, BIRKENSTOCK remains committed to function-driven design.
