5 Alternative European Summer Destinations

European summer is right around the corner. Understandably, some of the most popular cities will be flocked with tourists and therefore become incredibly expensive and not all that enjoyable. Here are 5 alternative European destinations to satisfy all your travel desires.

    Nice, France

With Paris expecting millions of tourists and fans for the Olympics, the South of France is the perfect place to get your french fix! Known for their beautiful beaches and old markets, Nice is the perfect way to see French culture in a relaxed environment. The castle hill of Nice gives breathtaking views of the city from the top of the hill that the castle of Nice once stood on. A stroll through old town Nice will take you right back to the olden times with narrow cobblestone streets and small family owned restaurants, it is the perfect place to getaway.

Paros, Greece

Greece has become an incredibly popular destination in recent years. If you want the perfect Instagram aesthetic with clear blue water and beautiful homes, look no further than Paros. Paros is the lesser known area of Greece compared to Santorini and Mykonos, but you will have an equally as amazing experience. Here you can enjoy golden beaches during the day and wander through the medieval villages set in the city center at night. A day trip on a private boat is the best way to explore the city and enjoy the warm weather!

Zagreb, Croatia

The capital of Croatia is one of the smallest and most walkable cities in Europe. The city is full of rich history with museums, open air markets, churches and more to explore. It is divided into an upper and lower section, making it the perfect destination to explore for a long weekend. The Croatia National Theatre located in Zagreb is an absolute must for lovers of Opera, Ballet, and Drama. You can see the running productions and available tickets here

Cork, Ireland

Cork is the largest city in Ireland. It is known as the culinary capital of the country, and the local markets and restaurants absolutely prove that to be correct. Here you can enjoy fresh produce, markets, and a bustling restaurant scene, perfect for the foodies! You can even do a Cork City Biking tour that will take you all throughout town and explain the history of Cork. Oh and don’t forget to visit the Cork Butter Museum, because how could you not!

Riga, Latvia

While Latvia might not be the first place you think of when planning your European summer, you surely would not be disappointed vacationing in Riga. Known for the incredible architecture and fascinating walking tours, Riga is the perfect place to spend a couple of days. Riga houses one of the largest food markets in the world, Central Market, right along the river. Riga Art Nouveau Centre is one of a few museums dedicated to the arts. The centre recreated a typical 1900’s apartment interior so one may view the typical nouveau style in an authentic manner and is a must see for art and architecture aficionados.

Wherever your adventures may take you this summer, take time to get to know locals, explore different areas, and eat lots of delicious food! After-all, a European summer is the best there is.
