London is hardly short of fish and chip shops, but every so often you come across a place that reminds you why the dish became a British institution in the first place. Our latest discovery? The Mayfair Chippy’s Knightsbridge outpost, which delivered what may well be the best fish and chips we’ve ever eaten.
Located on Brompton Road, just moments from Harrods, The Mayfair Chippy has built a reputation for elevating the humble chippy experience. The brand has earned both Michelin Guide recognition and an AA Rosette since opening in 2015, while remaining committed to sustainably sourced seafood and classic British cooking.
The Knightsbridge location feels a world away from your average takeaway. Spread across multiple levels, the restaurant combines nostalgic British seaside charm with a polished, contemporary aesthetic, complete with a dedicated gin bar and airy dining spaces.
Of course, we came for the fish and chips.
We ordered the restaurant’s signature classic fish and chips and immediately understood why The Mayfair Chippy has become one of London’s most talked-about seafood destinations. The fish arrived encased in an impossibly light, crisp golden batter that shattered beautifully with every bite, revealing perfectly flaky, fresh fish beneath. Paired with chunky chips, mushy peas and homemade sauces, it was everything fish and chips should be — comforting, indulgent and executed with precision. The restaurant’s famous Mayfair Classic has become a signature for good reason.
Equally impressive was the lobster roll. Generously filled and packed with sweet, succulent lobster, it struck the perfect balance between luxury and simplicity. Rich without being heavy, it complemented the restaurant’s seafood-first approach and proved that there’s far more on offer here than just Britain’s favourite takeaway.
What sets The Mayfair Chippy apart is its ability to celebrate classic British comfort food while maintaining an unwavering focus on quality ingredients and sustainability. The seafood is responsibly sourced and the menu extends beyond fish and chips to include oysters, crab, mussels and a range of seasonal specials.
Adding another layer to the brand’s appeal is its latest collaboration with British lifestyle label Jam Industries. Launched to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day, the limited-edition collection features nautical-inspired T-shirts and caps that blend British seaside nostalgia with contemporary streetwear. The collaboration reflects both brands’ shared appreciation for craftsmanship, heritage and coastal culture, and is available in limited quantities.
In a city filled with excellent dining options, it takes something special to stand out. The Mayfair Chippy Knightsbridge does exactly that. Whether you’re a lifelong fish-and-chips purist or simply looking for one of London’s most satisfying seafood meals, this is a restaurant worth making a special journey for.
The verdict? Come for the fish and chips, stay for the lobster roll, and leave wondering whether you’ve just found London’s ultimate modern chippy.
