Take the cruise clichés you think you know and throw them out the porthole. Images of cramped cabins, dated interiors, and forgettable buffet dinners cannot be further away from Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas – a modern 20-deck floating luxury resort that just happens to move.
If there is one thing we deduced on board, it is this: if Royal Caribbean built a city, this would be it – the best city in the world. Within eight distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own unique character, Legend of the Seas offers 28 dining destinations, electric nightlife, world-class entertainment, record-breaking pools, real gardens, and so many activities that even a week-long itinerary becomes the most exciting type of logistical challenge for the planners of the group.
Verge was lucky enough to step aboard the preview sailing of the newest Icon Class ship, officially the largest cruise ship in the world, and explore a vessel built around one simple idea: there should never be a dull moment. And it absolutely delivers.
Spanning 1,196 feet in length and weighing 248,663 gross tonnes, the scale is almost impossible to grasp until you are walking through it – moving seamlessly between adrenaline-fuelled attractions and quiet garden landscapes, from sunrise swims to late night cocktails. From the moment you step into the ship in the Royal Promenade, with its floor-to-ceiling ocean views, over 15 restaurants, bars, and lounges, shops, and the spectacular kinetic Pearl sculpture, it becomes clear that no inch of the space is left without a wow-factor or Instagrammable moment.
Thrill Island is the ultimate adrenaline stop, home to Category 6, the largest waterpark at sea with six record-breaking slides, alongside Crown’s Edge, a skywalk, ropes course, and zipline suspended 154 feet above the ocean. There’s also the FlowRider surf simulator, Adrenaline Peak climbing, and the reimagined Lost Dunes mini golf course. For a complete change of pace, Central Park is an idyllic haven away from the buzz, filled with over 33,000 real plants set around winding paved pathways and open-air dining destinations and bars – all with a peaceful backdrop of birdsong or dulcet tones of live harpists at moments throughout the day.
For families, Surfside hosts Splashaway Bay, Baby Bay, a colourful carousel, arcade, and family-friendly dining, while Chill Island brings the resort atmosphere with multiple pools, ocean views, and Swim & Tonic, the fleet’s first swim-up bar. The AquaDome transforms from a tranquil daytime space with panoramic ocean views into one of the ship’s main entertainment hubs after dark, complete with restaurants, bars, and spectacular AquaTheater shows every night.
The Hideaway is one of the stand-out spaces on board. The suspended adults-only retreat channels luxury beach club, complete with a dedicated bar, DJ sets, an infinity pool floating 135 feet above the ocean, and uninterrupted views across the sea. The 24-hour whirlpools spotted around the neighbourhoods offer the perfect spot for sunrise dips or a late-night soak beneath the stars.
In terms of ‘living’ spaces on the ship, there are 29 different room categories, from family staterooms and Infinite Balconies to sprawling suites and the Ultimate Family Townhouse. Our Ocean View Balcony stateroom challenged every preconception of what a cruise cabin looks like, with bright natural light, remarkable spaciousness, and a clever design with modernity and comfort in mind.
Food is another major ‘raising the bar’ moment for Legend, with 28 dining options available, and eagerly adopted as a checklist challenge by many cruisers. Casual favourites like Sorrento’s, serving pizza until 2am, and 24-hour Pearl Café make late-night snacking easy, while venues including Izumi Hibachi & Sushi, Chops Grille, and Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen offer more elevated dining experiences. Casual bites from the multi-vendor Aquadome Market, burritos from El Loco Fresh, and poolside favourites from Basecamp become a daily stop, while Windjammer remains a Royal Caribbean favourite, serving an impressive buffet spanning global cuisines – and doubling up as an informal rite of passage on Royal Caribbean ships.
The standout new addition is Hollywoodland Supper Club, an eight-course immersive dining experience inspired by the golden age of cinema. The evening combines exceptional food with some creative twists, live music, and thrilling theatrical presentation with movie-inspired props, dramatic flourishes with dry ice, and interacting performers, in a hot ticket that would generate months-long waiting lists in London.
Legend’s entertainment is second to none. Shockwave, the brand-new AquaTheater production, features artistic swimmers, aerialists, high-divers, sophisticated hydraulics, and a spectacular 55-foot waterfall cascading from the ceiling. The venue transforms throughout the performance, shifting from deep pools of water to fountain-filled stages in just moments around choreography and direction that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. This is an absolute must-see.
Elsewhere, guests can catch Absolute Zero’s ice performances, Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical, and other entertainment including live jazz, club nights, and the fan-favourite interactive Duelling Pianos show. There’s also ice skating, laser tag, escape rooms, and much, much more.
Legend of the Seas is an extraordinary achievement. The sheer amount packed into a single ship borders on absurd, yet it is so streamlined that it never feels chaotic. Our advice would be to maximise your time to experience as much as possible, and arrive prepared. The headline restaurants, productions, and experiences are in high demand, so make your priority bookings as early as possible. Beyond that, resist the temptation to account for every hour of the day, because some of the ship’s best moments come from stumbling on what is around the next corner.
We stepped ashore with one recurring thought, that there simply isn’t enough time to do it all. And perhaps that’s the point. Legend of the Seas rewards curiosity, attracts repeat visits, and leaves you feeling as though you’ve only scratched the surface.
Since disembarking, we may have enviously checked the ship’s live location more times than is healthy, suggested “Windjammer” when friends asked where we wanted to grab dinner next week, and subscribed to every Royal Caribbean sailing update available.
The conversion is complete. We are officially cruise people – and our next trip cannot come soon enough.
So where next? The answer is easy: anywhere. Legend of the Seas is the reason to book the trip. Everything beyond the gangway is a bonus.
