Miles Laflin, AKA, The P00L Guy, has taken the Tik Tok world by storm in the past three years, with everyone from teenagers to grandparents obsessing over his detailed pool cleaning content. Whilst a new age fascination, watching Miles cleaning pools seems to be one of those things people cannot get enough of. This generating him over 13 million Tik Tok followers from across the globe.
Fast forward two years and Miles is now the most well known pool cleaner on the globe, with over 13 million followers who regularly interact and comment on his posts (264M likes to be exact). His Tik Tok videos regularly hit 12 million views, that’s three times more than Kim Kardashian’s followers on the platform!
This everyday swimming pool engineer has captured the hearts of the nation and has been catapulted to fame. Appearing on several national television shows (Steph’s Packed Lunch, Amazing Clean ) as well as being extensively profiled in titles such as The Times, Cosmopolitan and even The New York Times.
We caught up with Miles to discuss how he now has a little black book full to the brim with celebrity clients, maintaining their pools and regularly speaking to them on the phone, including superstars such as Derek Chisora, Kathrine Ryan and TV Personality Stacey Solomon!
What is The P00L Guy all about?
The name Thep00lguy gives it away really but I’m swimming pool engineer of 14 years who’s recently found fame creating content on social media about my everyday jobs!!
Why do you think your content has become so popular?
I think my content has become quite popular because people don’t usually see what goes on behind the scenes maintaining swimming pools, so it’s pretty different to what they see on social media! And there’s a huge audience of people that love to see the process of something really dirty become really clean!
Are you a professional content editor? Or self-taught?
I’d never really done any editing before I started filming my TikToks so my editing skills were pretty basic but good enough for the videos to flow nicely and I think that’s played a huge role in my videos going viral
When did all this come about? How did it happen?
So like I said I’ve been an engineer for 14 years and never thought to record any of my jobs! But I started to just after lockdown and they blew up straight away!! I think I started at a good time with everyone at home and nothing to do but scroll through social media
Do you still have a proper day job? How do you keep a balance between work life and influencer life?
I’m very busy like all the time now because i do the work and film and then I need to edit the videos and post them! I think it helps that I really enjoy both my job and creating the content so it makes it a lot easier than it sounds.
What is the most memorable pool clean you’ve ever done?
The most memorable for me was “grandmas pool” not my grandma but that’s what we called the job! This pool had been left for 16 years untouched! It was a huge clean up! And it was quite special as it brought the customers whole family who used to use the pool back then together! And they were able to all use it again creating more family memories
How much money would you say you’ve made since making it ‘big’?
I can’t really say specifically how much I’ve made but I do earn a damn lot more than I was earning when I worked for the last company I was with so it was an easy choice for me to leave and start up my own business as thep00lguy
Do you know any celebs?
Yeh so I now have a few celebs who’s pools I do regular maintenance on such as Jermaine Jenas, Derek Chisora, Stacey Solomon and Ronan Keating!
What tips would you give to aspiring influencers? How can they achieve success?
I think to be successful on social media you need to really enjoy what your doing, be consistent and stay true to yourself!
What’s next for The P00L guy?
I’m still really enjoying creating short form and long form content. But for a while now I’ve really wanted to have a tv show! It’s all in the pipeline so watch this space
