London is about to get seriously spicy as acclaimed chef Robin Gill teams up with Irish food brand Strong Roots to bring one of Ireland’s most iconic late-night dishes to the capital. For one night only, the legendary Spice Bag lands at Bar Brasso for a FREE-flowing Spice Bag Happy Hour on Thursday 12th March – just in time for St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
Unlimited Spice Bags in London? Yes, Really.
In what might be the boldest London food pop-up of the season, guests can enjoy UNLIMITED Spice Bags for one hour, each perfectly paired with either a spiced margarita or a smooth Irish stout. Expect big flavours, crave-worthy crunch and a serious celebration of Irish comfort food as this cult takeaway dish continues to take the UK food scene by storm.
Gill has reimagined the late-night classic with playful twists, punchy spices and layered textures – all made using simple, real ingredients. It’s a nostalgic nod to his Irish roots, elevated with a chef-led spin that London foodies won’t want to miss.
What Is a Spice Bag?
For the uninitiated, the Spice Bag is an Irish chipper staple – typically packed with fries, peppers, onions, chilli, Chinese-inspired spices and curry sauce. It’s messy, indulgent and wildly addictive. Now, thanks to Strong Roots and Robin Gill, it’s getting a plant-based, flavour-forward upgrade.
The Three Spice Bags on the Menu
Guests at Bar Brasso can choose from three bold variations:
The Sweet & Spicy
A fiery-sweet twist made with Strong Roots Sweet Potato Fries. Layered with bold Chinese spices, garlic-infused red, green and yellow peppers, onions and crispy garlic, it’s finished with a rich curry sauce that hits every taste bud.
The Fiery Punch
Not for the faint-hearted. Sweet Potato Fries are topped with crispy tofu, black bean rayu, pickled chillies and deep umami flavour. Expect serious heat balanced with subtle sweetness – plus lashings of curry sauce for extra indulgence.
The Classic Kick
A nostalgic tribute to the original chipper classic. Golden Strong Roots Crispy Skinny Fries are tossed with sautéed peppers, onions, warming Chinese spices and crispy fried tofu, all drenched in Robin Gill’s indulgent curry sauce.
Expect Live Music, Drag Riverdance & Free Merch
The flavour doesn’t stop at the food. The evening promises a full-on Irish celebration with:
-
A live Irish band
-
Temporary Spice Bag tattoos
-
Free merch and prizes
-
A surprise Drag Queen Riverdance performance
It’s shaping up to be one of the most fun London St Patrick’s Day events of the year.

A Celebration of Irish Flavour
Speaking about the collaboration, Robin Gill said:
“I grew up eating Spice Bags in Ireland, so this was a really special nostalgic one for me. We’ve taken the classic recipe and seriously turned up the flavour and textures. These dishes are big, bold and spicy! Strong Roots Sweet Potato Fries bring a whole new energy – they are sweet, crispy and perfect with spice. Come celebrate with us at our Spice Bag Happy Hour or get stuck in and make them at home!”
Charlotte Turton, Managing Director at Strong Roots, added:
“Spice Bags are one of Ireland’s most iconic dishes and rapidly growing in popularity across the UK. Partnering with Robin is the perfect way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. He shares our Irish roots, our love of flavour, and our belief that food should be real and exciting. As a B Corp, we care about making food that’s good for you and good for the planet.”
Whether you’re Irish, honorary Irish for the week, or simply obsessed with London’s pop-up food scene, this one-night-only Spice Bag Happy Hour is set to bring serious heat to Nine Elms.
