TROLLEY BELOVED: TESCO LAUNCHES WEDDING GIFT REGISTRY SERVICE

Tesco has announced the launch of a new wedding gift registry service, offering couples a range of gift packages covering off the everyday essentials and Tesco Finest products that they actually want and need from their wedding guests. From dine-in dinners for at-home dates to a supply of household essentials to ease the domestic load, the product bundles aim to be genuinely helpful for newly married life.

This comes as research finds the vast majority of newlyweds or engaged couples (88%) agreed that the need for practical gifts is greater than it used to be and, of those, nearly half (48%) said that’s due to the rising living costs. When asked about the gifts they’d most like to receive, 40% of engaged or recently married couples said they would prefer practical over extravagant gifts for their nuptials, likely due to nearly nine in 10 (87%) couples living together and already owning household items they need.

Launched in partnership with Prezola, the gift registry underlines Tesco’s commitment to helping people through all of life’s moments, big and small, and includes bundles recommended by Married at First Sight’s relationship expert, Mel Shilling, designed to set newlyweds up for a lifetime of happiness.

With couples spurning more traditional presents like fine china (8%), crockery (10%) and towels (10%), a quarter say they would prefer dinner dates with their other half and a nearly a fifth (18%) dream of having their weekly shop taken care of for a year.

Tesco has launched six bespoke bundles on Prezola, developed in response to the real needs of modern couples across the UK to make life easier for newlywed couples navigating their first year of marriage:

  • The really useful stuff, as recommended by Mel Schilling – with one in five couples (20%) say that finishing the loo roll and not replenishing it is their biggest household gripe and 16% seeing red when the bin bag isn’t replaced, this package is complete with Tesco Luxury Soft Toilet Tissue, Tesco Extra Strong Drawstring Refuse Sacks and more, to ensure cupboards are always fully stocked
  • The perfect hosts – for the 37% of couples who believe the best thing about the honeymoon phase will be continuing the wedding celebrations with friends and family at home, this package has everything you need to stock an at-home bar, including Tesco Finest English Sparkling Wine and Tesco Finest Mojito Mocktails.
  • Sweets for my sweet  with more than half of couples (53%) saying they’d be more likely to forgive their partner if the apology comes with chocolate or their favourite sweet treat, this package will help couples make up and move forward

With nine in 10 couples agreeing that it’s important to celebrate little wins to ensure a happy marriage, with the best way to do so, being with a delicious treat (28%), an at-home date night (25%), a homecooked meal (21%) or a bottle of champagne (16%), there is also:

  • A toast to love, ensuring a healthy stock of champagne for the coming months
  • Dine-in dates, for six months’ worth of at-home date night meals
  • I love brew, for biscuits and brews for two for six months (good old catch up, couples own)

Tesco partner and MAFS dating and relationship coach, Mel Shilling, advises that being attentive to your partner’s needs is the key to navigating the first year of marriage and beyond.

“The key to setting up newlyweds for success is creating a foundation for everyday wellbeing and resilience so the romance can flourish. When the basics are taken care of, couples can prioritise their relationship and focus on creating moments that bring them closer. That’s why the Tesco wedding gift registry is genius. Setting aside expectations around ‘traditional’ wedding gifts, Tesco has listened to what couples today actually want and created something that will help build the foundations of a strong marriage. Whether that’s a champagne toast to celebrate a win, a cup of tea together in the morning or a home-cooked meal to share – it’s the little things that make a big difference.”

Cost of loving

Tesco found 63% of couples feel the financial implications of their big day has caused them stress, with it taking an average of a year to pay off. Of those who felt stressed about the cost of their wedding, eight in 10 (82%) say they’d prefer to use wedding gifts to help recoup costs post-wedding – and having a stockpile of everyday essential products would help them reduce their monthly outgoings (93%).
