Brits have long argued over pineapple as a topping, but a new nationwide study suggests the real debate in 2026 is how we eat pizza. According to fresh research from Three UK, nearly two-thirds (63%) of people admit they change their pizza-eating habits depending on whether they’re at home or out in public.
To celebrate the nation’s quirky pizza rituals, Three UK has teamed up with Papa Johns to offer customers a pizza for just £5 via its rewards platform, the Three+.
Brits Behave Differently Around Pizza in Public
While pizza is often seen as a casual comfort food, the research reveals that social settings influence how people tuck in. Over half of Brits (52%) say they use cutlery when eating pizza in public to avoid mess, while 32% admit it’s about appearing more socially acceptable.
The study also uncovered some surprisingly divisive habits:
- 36% eat toppings separately
- 35% flip slices upside down
- 29% dip pizza into ketchup
- 27% admit they’ve judged others for their pizza-eating style
Gen Z Leads the Pizza Etiquette Shift
Younger generations are far more conscious of how they eat pizza in public. Around 69% of Gen Z and millennials say they adjust their behaviour depending on the setting, compared to just 45% of over-65s.
Location also plays a role. Londoners top the list, with 76% saying they rethink their pizza strategy when dining out, followed by 70% in the North East.
The Many Ways Brits Eat a Slice
When it comes to technique, there’s no single “correct” way to eat pizza. For most Brits, it comes down to ease (37%), habit (37%), and enjoyment (32%).
Popular methods include:
- 32% stack two slices together
- 17% fold their slice in half
- 16% cut it into strips
- 11% bring the crust and centre together
- 9% eat the crust first
The UK’s Top 5 Pizza Personalities
To mark the £5 pizza offer, Three UK has identified five distinct pizza personalities across the UK:

- Crust Crusaders – Start with the crust, saving the centre for last
- Slicing Surgeons – Use knife and fork with precision
