The NFL hosted a preseason game at the Olympiastadion in West Berlin in 1990, but before last year the league had never been back to Germany. Beginning last season, the NFL made a commitment to travel to Germany for a series of regular season games during the next four years. As this season marks the second year of that commitment, the league is upon its return to the country, but will be traveling to a new location.
Last season history was made when Allianz Arena in Munich became the first German venue to host a regular season NFL game. This season the league will travel to Frankfurt with the addition of one extra game. Games will take place at Deutsche Bank Park, currently home to Eintracht Frankfurt of the Bundesliga.
The NFL has continued to expand its worldwide appeal as of recent with games in London and Mexico City, and look to add Germany as another fan favorite hot spot. Two games will be played, both with teams that have competed internationally before but never in Germany. Of the four teams traveling across the Atlantic, the Miami Dolphins did so most recently in 2021 against the Jaguars. They will be part of a high profile battle this Sunday.
Miami will take on the Kansas City Chiefs, a team who shares a 6-2 record and is amongst the best in the league. With two of the NFL’s top contenders battling it out, Frankfurt is sure to kick off with an explosive matchup. Excitement will ensue throughout with the high offensive presence of each side and the determination to win.
Each team currently leads their division and will not want to lose in front of an international stage. Kansas City is coming off the heels of a game they will want to forget in a loss to the Denver Broncos. Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins have been defeated by the Chiefs in their last three matchups and are winless against them since 2011.
What better place to snap a streak of these sorts than during your first ever game in Germany. A win will also ensure they remain atop their division which they have not won since 2008. They will also be looking for their first 7-2 start since 2000.
The Chiefs have not lost two games in a row since September of 2021, and will be looking to avoid that catastrophe. They will look to regain momentum as they play their first international game since 2019, in Mexico City. The Chiefs were part of that preseason game back in 1990, and will look to mark their return to Germany with a positive note.
Before next weekend’s game in week ten each team will have one more game to play, but will be sanguine about the near future. It’s been seven years since the Colts have played a game internationally and six for the Patriots. Indianapolis faced a loss at the hands of Jacksonville in London, while the Patriots defeated the Raiders in Mexico City.
Against each other, the Colts have only defeated the Patriots one time in their last 10 matchups dating back to 2011. Each side is currently last in their division and will be looking to climb out of the hole they are in. Depending on how each team performs in week nine will decide how much momentum each team carries into next weekend.
The Patriots have won all three international games they have played in the last 14 years, and have a reputation of performing well outside the States. They will have an international name to protect entering Frankfurt and will look to be victorious. A loss will mark their first international defeat in the NFL’s modern expansion and they will dig themselves further in the division
Two entertaining games will be on the table for fans in Germany, and both will not only be important divisionally but commercially. It will be important for each team to make a name for themself in another country, as an increase in fans is sure to come along with a victory. Each team will earn a bye week after their game in Frankfurt, perhaps only motivating them to play harder than ever.
