Superdrug is launching a nationwide initiative offering thousands of free at-home Health MOT test kits, giving people a faster way to check for common winter illnesses without the need to book a GP appointment.
The high street retailer will be distributing the kits at selected stores, helping customers test for illnesses such as flu, Covid-19 and Strep A from the comfort of their own homes. The move comes at a time when access to primary care remains under pressure and winter viruses continue to spread across the UK.
Winter Illnesses Continue to Rise Across the UK
New national health data shows flu cases rose sharply in early January, while Covid-19 infections have also increased, placing further strain on already stretched health services. Several NHS trusts have declared critical incidents in recent weeks due to surging A&E admissions, warning that hospitals are struggling to cope as winter illnesses take hold.
That pressure is now being felt across primary care. GP surgeries throughout England are seeing growing demand from patients experiencing coughs, fevers and sore throats, while access to routine appointments has become increasingly difficult. Around 1.7 million GP appointments now involve waits of four weeks or more, highlighting how challenging it has become for patients to receive timely advice from their doctor.
A One-Day Health MOT Initiative
To help ease uncertainty around winter symptoms, Superdrug, in partnership with Newfoundland Diagnostics, is running a one-day initiative designed to give people quick answers about their health.
On Thursday 22 January, thousands of free at-home Health MOT kits will be available at selected Superdrug stores across London — including Wimbledon and Marble Arch — while stocks last. The tests allow people to check for common winter illnesses without needing to attend a GP surgery or wait weeks for an appointment.
More information about Superdrug’s health services can be found on the official Superdrug website.

Reducing Pressure on GPs and the NHS
A negative result can offer reassurance and allow people to rest and recover at home, while a positive result can act as a prompt to seek medical help sooner during one of the busiest periods of the year for the NHS.
Frederick Manduca, co-founder of Newfoundland Diagnostics, said the initiative is about empowering people to make informed health decisions:
“Winter illnesses put huge pressure on both individuals and the healthcare system. By giving away at-home tests to thousands of people across London, we’re helping people check what’s going on before small issues become bigger problems.
“These tests allow people to assess their health quickly and confidently from home, helping them make informed decisions and easing unnecessary pressure on GP services.”
